MAXWELL CUP COMPETITION. CHRISTIAN BROTHERS BEAT PACIFIC, CITY WIN AGAINST ATHLETIC. Good winter weather prevailed for the football matches on Saturday, but owing to tlie heavy rain;, during the week the Caledonian Ground, on which the principal fixture was played, was very soft, and soon reached the stage when it was badly cut up, making it extremely difficult for the players to keep their feet or handle the ball with accuracy. Considering the conditions, the match between Christian Heathers and Pacific was a remarkably good one, both sides doing their best to make it fast and open. Christian Brothers by four points, but on the day’s play Pacific were quite as good as the winners, putting up a really good performance. Until about five minutes before time Pacific looked like winning, but Christian brothers took advantage of an opportunity ■nd registered a try, which turned the core in their favour. City had a comfortble win against Athletic on Chisholm 'ark. The match between Kaikorai and .aitangata was postponed.

HKISTIAN BROTHERS v. PACIFIC. The match between Christian Brothers ud Pacific was played on the Caledonian .1 round. Christian Brothers attacked at -he start, and after a couple of minutes’ , play Rich was nearly over Pacific line, but a force clown brought relief. A little later the Greens attacked again, but a penalty kick enabled Blazcy to clear, and play settled down near halfway. A nice kick by Blazcy transferred play inside Christian Brothers’ twenty-five, but the attack was quickly repulsed, and the scene of operations shifted to the other end. I Pearce had a shot at goal from the Pacific twenty-five, but it was a failure. A long dek by Pearce was responsible for play being taken well inside the Pacific twentyfive, where B. O’Connor kicked a fine goal , from a penalty. Passing by the Pacific I backs put the Greens on the defensive, but ; a clearance was effected promptly. Pacific , returned to the attack, and a '■’.ever passing bout ended in Butler scoring a good try near the corner. Blazcy just failed to convert, the ball going under the bar. Llood following up and tackling enabled Pacific to attack again. Blazcy had a . shot at goal from a penalty, but the effort : was a failure. A little later the Christian Brothers’ backs broke away, and Pearce ended up a fine run from the Pacific twenty-five by scoring at the corner. Pearce failed with the kick at goal. Good following up and nice footwork put Pacific in a strong position, and Butler got very close to the Greens’ line, where some fast play took place. The defence was sound, however, and a clearance was gradually made. The Pacific backs broke away from about halfway, and Blazey brought the' movement to a successful issue by scoring near the corner after making a brilliant run from the twenty-five. Mattingly failed with the kick. Christian Brothers then rushed play to the other end, but a force down was the only result. A nice piece of dribbling by Pacific was checked only a few yards from the Christain Brothers’ line, but in a twinkling the Reds were busy on defence. At half time play was at halfway, and the scores were; Pacific 6 points, Christian Brothers 5 points. Christian Brothers had a slight advantage at the opening of the second spell, but they met with stubborn resistance, and before long they were busy on defence. After a lot of open play near halfway the Greens got as far as the Pacific twenty-five, but were soon forced back, and a nice piece of' passing by the Reds took play to the twenty-five. Christian Brothers forced down just afterwards. After a lot more open play Pearce was brought down by Blazey on the line, but he managed to force down. The Greens tried hard to get their backs going,, but the slippery ball handicapped them considerably. Eventually they got inside the Pacific twenty-five, but once more the defence was very solid, and they could make no further headway. After a tnue Pacific attacked again, but without becoming dangerous. The ball travelled up and down the field at a very fast pace considering the conditions. About 10 minutes before time Christian Brothers attacked strongly, but Pacific managed to force down. A few minutes before time fast, open play by the Greens took the bull very close to the Pacific line, and after a scramble Holloway forced his way* over between the posts. B. O’Connor converted. An attack by Pacific was repulsed, and when time was called play was in the Reds’ twenty-five. The scores were:Christian Brothers .. 10 points Pacific 0 points Mr E. Watson acted as referee. CITY v. ATHLETIC. City and Athletic met on Chisholm Park. Although City did not field a full team the side proved far too good for the north-end men, and the game, in consequence, was very one-sided. .. M‘Cabo carried on, and then passed out to Kosenbroclc, who beat the opposing full-back, to score wide out. Eckhoff failed with the kick at goal. Another rush ended in L. Eckhoff scoring in a good position. B. Eckhoff was successful with the kick. Another passing movement by the City backs immediately afterwards ended in AI f Cabe beating several opponents, and scoring behind the tIT '' vas convcl 'ted by M’Cabe.
