Despite the recent heavy rains the inside grass at Wingatui provided fair going yesterday morning. The track had dried up well and the going, although on the soft, side, provided a good foothold, but not in favour of recording smart gallops from a watch point of view. A new strip of ground was open where the grass is fairly lengthy. El Boa and Glenrowan opened up by running over half a mite in 53 3-ssec, with apparently nothing much between them at the finish. Kiliornu was finishing better than Broadficld at the end of five furlongs in Imin 7 2-ssec. Membo led out from Waving Corn, but towards the end of' six furlongs in Imin 21 4-ssec, the latter travelled like a winner. Narrative and Filosol came over five furlongs in Imin 7 2-ssoc, and towards the end the former seemed to have most .in reserve. Filosol was giving away a year, and the fact formed a handicap against him. Best Pojicy aud Sahno Salar required Imin 9 2-sseo to cover five furlongs, and the former appeared as if he could have recorded a smarter gallop. lardy appeared to be waiting behind Money Mine when travelling over the early part of seven furlongs, but then drew up to win the gallop in Imin •i/^-osec— the last sis in Imin 24sec. It did not seem, a fair test,, through not being solid from end to end. A considerable time afterwards Royal Bason came out, and without being bustled l ar * ni ß n E * x sev en furlongs in ‘ Imm 21 2-jsec. The Saxby gelding strode along freely all the way and pulled up well. Arrowniir is being mentioned in connection with his Oamaru Engagements. Concentrate has been causing his .trainer some anxiety during the past few days °, w A ng m° a poisoned leg, but (says “Vedette ) over the week-end he made a good deal of improvement, and an early recovery i 8 expected. When the Australian trip was under consideration again by Mr R. J. Murphy, he had first of all the idea ot entering his horses for the Queensland meeting, held during the June holidays, with- Concentrate to carry his colours in the .Brisbane Cup, of £4OOO, two miles. This- would have meant, however the horses leaving this week at latest for Australia, and the idea has been abandoned. The horses will leave some time in June to race' in and around Sydney, as they did last year. Catkin will not return to New Zealand. He was sold in Sydney, at a price understood to be. something like 1200 guineas. There are 850 days’ racing in Victoria, figures which make the Dominion’s total look small. . A proposal has been made to curtail the Victorian list. .Alaric was. purchased last week by Mr R. J. McDonald, of Dannevirke, who raced Mountain ' Crag with success last season. Alaric will remain under F. M’Kay’s care until after the Wanganui meeting, and will then be handed over to G. Greene to train. The Marlborough mare Imarosebud, according to reports, was sold last week, aud is likely to do her future racing in Australia. Mrs A. M'Donald has received from Mrs M. A. Perry a two-year-old colt by Tea Tray—Piraeus, a half-brother to Kuhic and Teri. A brother to • Goshawk (Magpie—Fadelraa) realised 900'guineas at the Sydney yearling sales.. Charlatan is reported to have shown a good display over the Riccarton fences when schooled during the early part of the week. It is understood that Countersign will not fulfil her engagement at Oamaru. She ricked herself a few days ago and had to be eased up in her work. Solgele will have the services of C. Emerson in the saddle at Oamaru. The Absurd gelding Mime is again an active meraber»of F. P. Ciaridge’s stable. It is reported that Caterpillar has developed lameness and will not be seen out at Oamaru. ■ T. Wilson is in charge of the team in D. P. Wilson’s stable during the latter's absence in the North Island. It is reported that WharnclifTc rapped one of his knees whilst schooling recently and unless he makes a good recovery will hot be sent to the North Island. Radiac is reported to be shaping well in his schooling over fences. From all accounts Aussie won at the Waikato mce-ting through being allowed to go to the front and hold up 4be pacebad judgment on the part of those with proved stayers in the field. Such errors of judgment are not uncommon and are perhaps due more to faulty riding instructions from the trainer or owner than to a lack of horsemanship on the part of the. rider. Early in March, Pure Tea, who hails from Ndw Zealand, beat all but Sheila in a juvenile event at Hawkesbury (says a Sydney writerl. On April 16 Pure Tea. was again produced. lu the Youthful Stakes at Tattersall’s meeting she was always one of the leaders, and eventually finished fourth. On this performance it would appear as if Pure Tea has improved, and that it should not be long before she enters the winning lists in Sydney. At any rate., following on this performance, Pure Tea is sure to be in prime request when next she is produced on a suburban course. When a breeder wishes to buy a atal-

kas to.take a lot on trust, unless he buys a horse that has already proved himself a success, and those- horses ■ are practically unpurchaseable in England. Mr Percy Miller is off to the Old Country to buy a horse, but he may have overlooked a bargain nearer' home (comments a u■ i ey writer) ._ As an example of what has to be paid for a horse in England, 20,000 guineas was refused for ShoP ll - 11 .. 3 . 3 a two-year-old, though he was not eligible for the British Stud Book, At the sale of Mr . Bundle Brandon’s thoroughbreds at Easter, Mr John Brown only paid 2200 guineas for an unbroken: English two-year-old colt by the crack sire Hurry On. This colt is from Paraffin Eight, dam of three winpers, and belongiiig to the celebrated ITlnminata family, j gave us, among others, Cicero, sire Rossendale. sire of Rampion; a j, ll , o ol ,, J£iy,'dam of Magpie. This branch ° it i 1 family seems. to acclimatise well hero, and a buyer could -hardly want any hotter pedigree for a stallion than that possessed by his Hurry On colt. Mr Brown may have got a better bargain right here on the spot than Mr .'Miller will get by a trip to England. TROTTING FIXTURES. May 4. —Cambridge T.C May 4.—Oamaru J.C. (two events). Acceptances are due to-day for the Forbury Park Trotting Club's meeting., Un-. | e f s there is a considerable shrinkage made by the acceptances, some record fields are likely to, be seen out at the meeting,. A matter in which many trainers think there could be an improvement is that ot _ the drawing of post positions. They P°V", t> u t (says “Orion”), and very rightly that at the small meetings they are told the post positions by the starter, and contend that there should be nothing to prevent the draw, being, made for 1 all races prior to the opening event and the draw posted in some prominent place for all to see. Among the acceptances for the Oamaru irot Handicap (one mile and a-half), are AgmgoNingo, .trained by J. Bryce (Upper mccarton), and Grand Canyon, trained by Honald (Belfast). These two-year-olds are. the ruling favourites for the *ew Zealand Sapling Stakes. Stoney - , who was purchased by Mrs I. E. Sweetapple, of Auckland, is an 11-year-old grev gelding by Rock Huon—Ranji mare and has records of 3.22 for a mile and ahalf and 4.35 2-5 for two miles. Commenting on the form shown at a recent meeting, of the New South Wales Xrotting Club, a writer in the Australian Trotting Record has the following:— Another horse that gave himself some£”"B go on with was Steel All. who trom 24 yards won the Plying (1 mile 75 yards) in 220 2-5, which works out at Occident led into the straight, when Steel All. with a brilliant run, gov up in time to beat him by half a iength.
