TUNNEL WORK.
MEN OBJECT TO CONDITIONS. (Peb United Press AssndiATioN.j WELLINGTON, Alay 2. Referring to a notice issued by the New Zealand Workers’ Union urging men not to accept work at Kotemaori tunnel on the Napier-Wairoa railway, Air Cook, secretary, refused to give details, on the ground that negotiations were proceeding between the union and the Public Works Department. It was claimed that the conditions were worse than in other tunnels. The Alinister of Public Works (Air E. A. Ransom) says: “The matter has been gone into very carefully by the department’s engineers, both local and head office, and it is considered that the prices fixed are such as will enable, the men to make wages considerably in advance of the award rate for that cli'ss of work. If some workers are at present finding difficulty in getting any work at the basic rate of 14s per day, I do not think that others should refuse to continue in employment at rates which will enable them to earn approximately double that amount.” *
