CENTRAL OTAGO.

CROMWELL NOTES.

(From Oub Own Correspondent,) CROMWELL. April 30. Cold, drizzling rain set in from the squill early on Sunday morning, and continued until late last evening. This morning it had cleared, with signs of a return to fine weather. The rain did not affect the river, which is very low. Mr W. M’Kenzie, postmaster, who has been transferred to Lawrence, and who took up his duties thexe. yesterday, was made the recipient of several presentations from the residents of Cromwell. At a public gathering the Mayor spoke in high appreciation of Mr'M’Kenzie’s courteous and obliging manner and tho efficiency with which he had filled the position. These remarks were endorsed by other speakers. The postal staff presented him wjth a smoker s outfit, the Boy Scouts with a special badge for and examiner, while a handsome gift wag made by the Royal Arch Masons. The shooting season for native’ and imported game opens to-morrow, and already parties have gone out to the more secluded haunts. Unfortunately, fn far too many cases, in both the Otago and Lakes Societies’ district, a great deal of poaching has already been done. The autumn months, so far, have been ideal from a pastoralist’s point of view, and there has been pronounced growth right up to the present.
