KARITANE NOTES.

(Fbom O v it Own Courespos’dent.) KARITANE, February 13. The weather is at present all that could lie desired, and holiday-seekers are enjoying the bountiful sunshine to the full. The reopening of the schools has compelled school-going families to return to thencity homes. Nevertheless, very many of the cottages are again occupied, and uen faces are seen 6n the beaches. The fishermen. however, are experiencing lean times, and a few of them are considering the advisability of removing to fresh and more profitable fishing grounds.

Visitors to Karitane include the Hot'. G H, Jupp, who, with Mrs .Jupp is spending a quiet holiday at this popular resort.

ties Society, A suitable motor parking area is badly needed, so that roads may be kept clear of the many cars that visit the , beaches every holiday and week-end. It is understood that the Amenities Society has the matter in hand, and ii likely that the Otago Motor Club wi! assist in providing a suitable parking area and camping ground. Mr A. E. Ansell, M.P., visited the district last week-end, and conferred with the president and secretary of the Amenities Society' regarding several matters requiring attention. As a result of his visit, it is hoped i expedite the work of renovating the unsightly wharf and shed, and to hasten along other equally necessary work in the district. The mounds of seaweed deposited on the shores during the recent storms and. high tides are rapidly melting away, the process being accompanied by no offensive smells usually associated with decaying seaweed. The beaches are in beautiful order; the heavy seas having brought in liberal deposits of white sand. The Amenities Society is arranging to plant suitable trees along the back of the esplanade. This will greatly help to beautify the foreshore, and later provide shade and shelter for those who frequent the waterfront. The good work being carried out by the society' is much appreciated by visitors, and it is hoped that all holidaymakers will assist in protecting the trees and shrubs; and, further, join the membership and help to provide funds to carry' out further beautifying work. The Waikouaiti County Council has filled up some of the potholes in the road between Karitane and Seacliff, and has earned the thanks of car owners for the improvements effected. A few trucks of good river gravel would work wonders in bad spots and reduce tyre expenses. ' It is pleasing to note that a start has been, made with the work of metalling the road between Waitati and Evansdale. A little river gravel or rotten rock with the hard blue metal would be welcomed by motorists. Before permanent surface improvements are effected, to the Seacliff road, asuhway should be constructed in place of the very' dangerous railway crossing to the south of Seacliff, This is one of the worst danger spots in Otago, and too much importance cannot be placed on the necessity for immediate protective measures.
