TURKISH CURRENCY
ISSUE OF REPUBLICAN NOTES. A GIGANTIC FRAUD REVEALED. (United Press Association.) (By 'Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) LONDON, December 3. (Received Dec. 4, at 0.15 nun.) The Constantinople correspondent of the Daily Chronicle says that the completion of the replacement of the Imperial currency by Republican notes revealed a gigantic fraud, 'instead of giving the Turkish Government a surplus of 15,000,000 Turkish pounds there was a deficit of a million. • Thus about £1,670,000 has been stolen. Apparently public debt officials, when .changing old notes for clean ones, reintroduced old ones again into circulation,—Australian Press Association.
BYRD POLAR EXPEDITION WILL USE "CLETRAC” TRACTORS TO NEGOTIATE ANTARCTIC WASTES. Probably no Polar Expedition has ever been so well equipped as that of Commander Byrd. In addition to the latest scientific apparatus, the Byrd Expedition will utilise two “Cletrac” Crawler Tractors, which are propelled on the same principle as the '’Tanks” used in the Great War. This will enable tracts of broken ice, otherwise impassable, to be successfully' negotiated. * The " Cletracs " will also be used in the building of relief stations, sub-bases, and to excavate shelters for men and storehouses for materials. Landing fields for aeroplanes will be graded, and much work will be accomplished with “ Cletrac ” help against time before the Antarctic winter shuts down and holds everything in its icy spell. Needless to remark. Commander Byrd - l it, “ ot £ eac h a decision in favour of Oletrac Crawler Tractors without hav“rs“ made an exhaustive investigation pt all the leading tractors of the world, and it is a significant tribute to the efficacy and stalwart construction of the uletrac that it alone was chosen for this important work. In New Zealand Commander Byrd’s selection is heartily endorsed by; a number of farmers .and contractors who keep ‘‘-Cletracs ” in regular service doing farm work, road construction, scooping, and similar operations connected with the undertakings of Public Bodies. The, South Island Agents for Cletrac Crawler Tractors, Messrs J, E Watson and Co., Ltd., Dunedin and Invercargill, will, on request, gladly furnish full particulars of the different models and the particular work for which they have been designed.—Advt.
