BALCLUTHA DISTRICT NEWS. (From Our Own Correspondent.) BALCLUTHA, December 3, CRICKET. Cricket fixtures were not played on Saturday owing to the wet weather. It cleared up in the afternoon, however, and an enjoyable game took place at Port Molyneux Beach between the “ Wigglers ” from; Balclutha and the Fishermen, resulting in a win for the former. Nest Saturday the North v. South matches (A and B teams will take place for.the pmpose of picking a representative team to meet Southland. The A terns will meet at Balclutha, and the B teams at Stirling. ANGLING, Good fishing weather prevailed on Saturday afternoon after the rain, and some fair catches are reported. Big fish were evidently on the take. , From the Molyneux, In the vicinity of fialclutha, Mr R. M'Callum landed a 13-poundcr. This fish was caught with a live minnow floated down the stream. The next best fish was got by Mr F. J. Anderson with a spinning bait in the Koau branch. tr weighed six and a-half pound;, and was a really good fish. : • KAKA POINT CARNIVAL. At a well-attended meeting of the TTnfrn Point Carnival Committee on Saturday night the president reported that the offer of Messrs Charles Begg and Co. to furnish a company of Dunedin artists and orchestra for a concert in the new h..d at Kaka Point had been accepted for the Saturday night before Christmas (December 22).—The action was approved. In regard to the condition of the Parctai punt, concerning which complaints hao been received, the president reported that the county engineer bad informed him that the intention was to install a new pant later on, but the present punt would be placed in first-class repair in order to cope with the expected rush of traffic from Kaitangata to Kaka Point daring the carnival period. Mr John Gold stated that he was prepared to supply crockery, cutlery, etc., for the carnival catering at, the cast of one day’s hire, also the attendants for the refreshment booth on the Caledonian sports ground free of charge.—Mr Gold was accorded s. hearty vote of thanks. SUNDAY TRAINS. The first of the Sunday excursion trains from Invercargill to Dunedin yesterday . proved a great success. There were 13 cars containing 3do passengers when the train left Balclutha. It reached Dunedin on time (11.20 a.m,), and left at 5.15 p.m., Balclutha being reached at 6.50 p.m. RAILWAY INQUIRY. An inquiry concerning the railway accident between Warepa and Toiro on Thursday night, when 15 vehicles were piled up, is being held here to-day before Messrs J. Pickard (traffic manager, Invercargill), Morey (district railway engineer), Robertson (locomotive engineer from Christchurch), and P. Edmunds

(car and wagon Inspector, of Invercargill) . Two lengths of rails were desstroyed in the smash, and it was 3.13 a.m. on Friday before a join was effected. Meantime the station master at Baldutha (Mr C. L. Pope) and staff had a very busy time, so many trains being held up here. The station master personally was engaged at the scene of the wreck for the best part of the night.
