FORBURY PARK SUMMER MEETING.

TERENCE DILLON WINS CHIEF EVENT. The Forbury Park Trotting Club’s summer meeting was concluded on Saturday in perfect weather, although a mild fail of rain set in before the second last race on the programme. The early part of the day was dull, but pleasant, and devoid of the somewhat oppressive heat in evidence during the running of the first card. The rain that fell did not seriouslv affect the state of the going. The racing was very interesting throughout the day, and provided some close and exciting finishes. The principal event was a differently run race from the Dunedin Cup, as a solid pace resulted in the first mile being covered 4 l-ssec faster than on the previous day. Terence Dillon won well after taking charge a long way from home, and, although he did not go up to his handicap, threatens to qualify for the Trotting Cup before the season ends. They went the first half-mile in Imin 9 l-ssec, mile 2min 17 4-ssec, 10 furlongs in 2min 26 3-ssec, and the last half in Imin 4sec. Bonny Loran and Machine Gun both went a good solid race, but had no chance with the winner. Logan Park failed to begin correctly, and was pulled up, practically at the start. Logan Chief showed promise of returning to form, and Dalnahine finished fairly close to the placed lot. Dundas Boy outclassed the opposition in the Stewards’ Handicap, and Engagement just got up in time to beat Duke Bingen in the Crescent' Handicap. The winner seemed a trifle lucky to retain the verdict, even though placed first, as she galloped over 100yds when making the far turn for the last time. She gained ground on Clonmel by the gallop, and thus strongly suggested that the change of gait materially assisted her chance of success. Petrolense and John Mauritius collided, and they both fell, but neither drivers nor horses were injured. Daphne de Oro’s success in the Royal Handicap was freely anticipated, and the support accorded her formed a marked contrast to that on the previous day. She won handsomely, and without any display of anxiety on the part of her pilot. Brentloc’s speed soon carried him to the front in the Au Revoir Handicap, and Concliff, after being slow away at the start, went a great clip to run into second place. All Peters was established a good favourite for the Waverley Handicap, and over the final half-mile he drew away from Audalie, : who was followed by Quickfire, as they ran round the f&p. All Peters had the result in safe keeping in the straight, Audalie broke about 50yds from the post, when resisting a challenge from Quickfire, but caught back in a couple of strides, and the latter breaking just on the post, finished in line for second place. Peter Boy, Hawkesbury’s Pride, and Jade were next past the post. The stewards considered the fact of Quickfire breaking on the post, but decided not to disturb the judge’s placings. F. Holmes stated in evidence that when Audalie broke he veered out and so unbalanced his horse, who, in consequence, broke a couple of strides from the post. A rather sensational dividend was paid in connection with the Telegraph Handicap. Kate Thorpe hit the front in the first furlong, and stalling off Fashion _ Queen, beat her by over a length. Pointalena was a little further hack in second place, but Ayr, who started a good favourite, never looked particularly dangerous although always racing with the leading division. Avalanche went a more level - gait than usual when sent out for the Gore Handicap and made the running until half a mile from home, when he commenced to tire, and Sea Queen took charge. Sea Queen led into the straight, but Sarsaparilla came with a strong run and beat the favourite by half a length. Pieter Timmerman was a moderate third. All on the card went out for the Metropolitan Handicap, for which Logan Park started about £450 better favourite than the coupled pair Terence Dillon and Dalnahine. Machine Gun was a good third favourite. The chance of the favourite was soon wrecked, as something went wrong and he failed to move away with the rest of the field. Golden Devon, Downcast, Harry Audubon and St. Maura were prominent in front of Event in the early stages, with Terence Dillon always fairly handy. Terence Dillon raced to the front before commencing the final circuit and shot into a good lead as soon- as he entered the back stretch,’and at the far turn looked unbeatable. He finally won by i.ireo lengths from Bonny Logan, who beat Machine Gun by a similar margin, whilst Logan Chief ran up into fourth place and so gave indication that he is not yet a back number. Dalnahine finished next, and those on the front of the handicap can only be classed as a bad lot over a distance in a good class race. Dundas Boy was made a pronounced favourite for the Stewards’ Handicap, and after waiting with the leaders until the last half-mile he was sent to the front. From that on the result was never in doubt, and when Royal Authoress was ’as obviously sure of second money the rest of the field accepted defeat and eased up. The starter did not give a full sweep of the eyes over the field when making the start, as Nan Brent_ was going the reverse way when the barriers were released. Cannonball started favourite for the Crescent Handicap, and Engagement, Elzear and John Mauritius were also solidly backed. Elzear began badly and after dropping back behind Trampfast broke when going about seven furlongs, and was p 'led up. Duke Bingen made the early running from Clonmel and Blue Thorpe, but the last-named' broke up after entering the last half-mile. Engagement, Little Logan, John Mauritius and Petroleuse were all handy after the field had _ closed up when commencing the final circuit. Engagement broke before reaching the far turn, but gained by the gallop and was in front of Clonmel in the next hundred yards. Duke Bingen led into the straight, and after catching' back Engagement came with a wood run and won by a neck. Cannonball was a moderate third and Little Logan was next. Petroleuse and John Mauritius fell when racing about two furlongs and a-half from home. Liberal was side on when they were sent away in the Royal Handicap. Searchlight Lad made all the running, and over two furlongs from home was joined by Daphne De Oro, who won rather comfortably in the run home. Searchlight Lad broke up when halfway up the straight, and La Bonnette ran into second place and finisher! four lengths behind the winner. Diamond Child finished a fair third, but nothing had a chance with the winner at the business

end of the journey. The winner started a solid favourite. Backers concentrated their attention on. Brentloe and Concliff in the Au Revoir Handicap and their judgment proved correct, as (hey finished first and second. Brentloe ran past Jean M'Elwyn after going throe furlongs, and was never seriously challenged over the balance of the journey. Concliff put in brilliant work and racing through the field got up in time to beat Jean M'Elwyn for second place. William the Great, Desert Star, and Donside finished close up to the third horse. Acre and Nnntwich were slow to begin, and held a very small chance from the start. The totalisator handled £36,149 for the day, as compared with £37,859 10s for the second day of the summer meeting last year. The total for the meeting was £62,015 10s. compared with £63,286 10s last vear. Results: WAVERLEY HANDICAP, Of 200sovs, second ,40sovs, and third 20sovs. Harness. Trotters only. Avalanche was still in front commencing the second lap, and at the far turn was followed by Len Wood, Sea Queen, and Pieter Timmerman, the quartet being well clear of the rest of the field. Evidence was given by Mr Greenslade, S. Todd (the driver of Cardinal and Blue) Roy Berry (the driver of Dundas Boy, who was running close to Royal Authoress at the time), and Free Holmes.
