NOTES ON THE RACING. (Special to Daily Times.) AUCKLAND, January 29. Cynthia in some of her races has been slow out of tho barrier, and this has been primarily responsible for her being still maiden up. to Saturday. Nevertheless, she was made favourite in the Trial Handicap, and getting away well this time, the English bred mare, who was always handily placed, came away in tho straight to score comfortably. La Roma was second best and Liaison and Micrometer did best of the remainder, Uralla accomplished a pleasing performance in the High-weight Handicap, taking charge half a mile from home and winning with ease. Bold Front was badly hemmed in at the home turn, but when he got clear managed to get second. This was about his best effort to date and he may show to-morrow that he was unlucky yesterday. Tea Time won the sprint well, coming at the right end. He is a greatly improved gelding, but had to be hard ridden out to land the stake, for Nancy Lee, High Finance and then Dave troubled him over the final couple of furlongs. The lastnamed got within a long neck of the winner after being a long way back in the early stages. Nancy Lee might have got into the money, but over the last bit she got squeezed on the rails. The Takapuna Cup was a splendid race and signalised the return to winning form of Eden all, who was ridden an ideal race by Green. He had about half a dozen lengths to make up from the half-mile, and he did it gamely. After Pegaway had carried him wide at the home turn, Eden Hall just fot ud to head Transformer on the post, he latter ran his best race for a long time. Desert Glow, who was none too well handled, was a good fourth and should do better. Pegaway was awkward on tho turns, yet ran well. Alonsoa was ridden into the ground, otherwise she might have hung on to the lead a bit longer. Speechless was a big favourite in the Ferry Handicap, but was a bit unlucky. She was on the outside of several horses at the turn and then carried wide out only to finish second. The winner turned up in Winsome Boy, who was lucky enough to get through on the inner and pay a fine price. Only a fortnight ago he was sold for less than a three figure sum, and the first prize hero was worth £2OO, Ripon Abbey, who was making his second appearance, found seven furlongs a bit too far. Mithra, by Australian Sun from Bpnum, who showed promise by running third at Ellerslie a month ago in her first race, made her second appearance in the Calliope Handicap, and after waiting on the leaders to the home turn, she came away in the straight scoring handsomely. She is a good fdlv, but was a bit lucky in that White Wings, a sister to Ajrrion," lost a lot of ground at the start and then was flying at the finish, being close up. third. The Begum registered her fourth second placing on end ( but her turn will come on the country circuit shortly. Mauriaena drew the extreme outer, and tho effort to obtain position left her without a finishing run. Judge’s Box, after being nearly knocked over at the start in which Baby Bun, War I Officer and Captain Cobham were also ■ mixed up, accomplished a splendid per- i forrnance' She quickly made up her ground j and finally won Judge’s Box I is so well that she mav win again soon. ] Baby Bun should also improve. Ti Tree made hacks of Branson and the I others opposed to her in the final event, i winning by over four lengths after taking ! charge at the five furlongs. She is in great form. Branson outclassed the remainder, and Siaosi, who had a good position early and then dropped back last, made a brilliant effort that got him third.
