The monthly meeting of the Otago Hospital Board was held last evening, there being present—Mr A. F. Quelch (in the chair), Miss Runciman, Mrs Ross, Messrs M'Lellan, Morgan. The Director-general of Health wrote stating that the Minister had signified his approval of the appointment of Ur A. Matheson as house surgeon.— Received. Dr C. A. Taylor intimated that he expected to commence duty as medical tutor and senior resident medical officer r.bout the middle of February.—Received. Mr F. P. Switalla wrote expressing his appreciation of the attention received in the Hospital.—Received. The committees’ reports were adopted. Dr Newlands said that the only matter of note in the Hospital Committee’s report was the ivcjuest to the Government for £SOO for the temporary accommoda tion for mental patients. Mr Gallaway moved—“ That the words —‘ their appointments may be terminated by three months notice in writing on either side in the case ol a, resident medi jal officer, and one month’s notice in writing on cither side in the case of a house surgeon ’ —be deleted from section 1, part 4, of the Otago Hospital Board by-law.” In moving the motion Mr Gallaway said it was necessary to pass it in order that the board might be in a position to carry out a resolution adopted some time ago with regard to leaving contracts ' with their house surgeons. The motion was supported by letter from the board’s solicitors. He did not think there was any doubt about getting the Minister’s consent to the motion. Dr Newlands asked what Mr Gallaway had in his mind as a substitute. fir Gallaway replied that he did not propose to substitute anything. It was not necessary. It was simply altering the by-law. Mr Morgan said he was going to vole against the motion, looking at the broad facts of the case. He though it would be better to get junior men to enter into an agreement instead of having a hard and fast rule. If they tried to force the lliimr they would not get ,s good a class of men to help them in the Hospital as they got now. If a man said he would do' a certain thin? he would carry it out to the letter. The Dun edin Hospital was recognised as one if the best hospitals there was for tuition. It was recognised as the best in the Dominion. Mr Larnach said he thought Mr Morgan had forgotten the motion passed recently. The motion was carried.
