OTAGO A. AND P. SOCIETY.

The monthly meeting of the Otago A. P. Society was held in the society s board room yesterday and attended by Messrs W. O.' - M’Kollar (president, in the chair), A. King, E. M. North, H. Turner, A M‘Kay, D. J. Ross, .1. Nimmo, George Ross, A. Johnson, J. Hellyer, John Young, and E. C. Hazlett. Before proceeding with the business, the President referred to the death of Mr A. J. Keith, of Ashburton, a. member of the society for many years, a prominent exhibitor, and one whose services as judge were repeatedly availed of, and moved—- " That this meeting places on record its regret at the death of Mr A. J. Keith, and desires to extend to his family its sincere sympathies in their bereavement.’—The motion was carried in the usual manner.

On the motion of Mr H, Turner, seconded by Mr D. J. Ross, the Finance Committee’s report that accounts amounting to £343 12s 3d be passed for payment, was approved. Mr M’Kellar reported that a meeting of (he special sub-committee appointed to consider what action should be taken to meet the loss incurred at the Summer Show through unfavourable weather, and also what steps should be taken to ensiuc better competition in the various sections, had been held that morning, and the vari ous proposals submitted wcr e carefully considered.-—After the various proposals had been discussed, it was decided to adjourn the meeting until February 10. The committee expressed the hope that a full report would be submitted for fbe coi> sideration of the General Committee at the next meeting. . , The annual ram and ew e fair was fixed for Thursday, March 29, and it was decided that breeders and vendors must state the name of the breeder when entering their sheep for sale. The horse parade was fixed for Thursday September 27, and it was decided to hold over the fixture of the Winter Show dates until next meeting. The Secretary pointed out that the Jockey Clubs races would be held on June 2,4, and 6 and suggested that the Winter Show should open on Saturday, June 2, and continue until Thursday, June 7. The Dunedin Fanciers’ Club wrote applying for the lease of Brydone Hall for June 14 and 15 which was held over until the dates of the Winter Show had been definitely fixed. The following suggested competitions were received and were referred to the Cattle and Committees for their consideration;—First prize of £2O, for best bullock under 30 months, the prize bullock to become the property of the society, and, if suitable, used for a guessing competition ; a prize of £lO, for the best four wethers, most suitable for the frozen meai New Zealand and Australian Land Company (Hampden) wrote lei-uiniiig a cheque of £l2 10s prize money gained at the last Summer Show, as a contribution to the society. Mr D. Windle also wrote returning his cheque of £3 3s touaids judges’ expenses as a donation to the society.—On the motion of Mr E C. Hazlett, a vote of thanks was accorded the New Zealand and Australian Land Company and Mr D. Windie for their generosity. The Dunedin Dairymens Association wrote expressing the committee’s sympathy with the society in the serious loss incurred at the Summer Show, and advising that it was willing to pay £5 as a first prize in this class.—The secretary was instructed to acknowledge the letter and to thank the Dunedin Dairymen’s Association for their contribution. Mr Peter Walker (Palmerston) wrote complaining that two outsiders had been secured to judge one class in the Ayrshire section owing to the judge who was officiating being interested in one of the animals some time ago. Mr Walker considered that exhibitors should be consulted before an appointment was made.—The matter was dealt with by the executive, which advised Mr Walker that the judge of the Ayrshire cattle had reported that ho had owned one of the animals some time ago, and preferred that someone else should be selected to judge that particular class. Two men were selected, and it was reported that the animals were practically placed in the same position as if Mr Weir had acted. The executive’s reply was approved. The New Zealand Friesian Association wrote regretting that it could not award a gold medal for most points owing to the association not having received the requirdß number of entries. At the close of the business, the Pi’esident extended a hearty welcome to Mr George Ross, the newly-elected representative of the Palmerston district. •

The Royal Society forwarded a copy of regulations dealing with side shows, and this was referred to the executive for its consideration. .
