ELLERSLIE TRACK NOTES.

(Special to Daily Times.) AUCKLAND, December 22. A brilliant gallop over nine furlongs by Mask and a rare display of sprinting by Aussie and Gascony were the features of this morning’s training operations at Ellerslie. Others who went sufficiently well as to warrant attention were Papatu, Count Cavour, and Mundane. The conditions were ideal, and the trestles on the course proper were about 55ft out, not quite so far ns on Tuesday. Bennanee was full of running when he finished a good two lengths clear of Satrap at the end of a round, and improved considerably on Tuesday’s effort. They ran the first quarter in 23 2-ssec, the first six furlongs in „ Imin 29 2-ssec. Bennanee's time for the complete round of nine furlongs was 2min 1 4-ssec. It was an impressive effort on his part. Satrap, too, went nicely. _ Once again the lightly weighted Papatu showed to advantage, this time over a mile and a-quarter. He was accompanied by Rapier and Te Monanui. The trio got away 'on terms and ran the initial three in 41 2-ssec, half a mile in 54 3-ssec, seven furlongs in 2min 35 3-ssec, and the final three in 39 4-ssec. They ran their complete round of nine furlongs in 2mm 2 l-ssec, and finished up a mile and aquarter in the very good time of 2min 15 2-ssec. Papatu did the best over the last couple of furlongs, and passed the post two lengths ahead of the_ other pan - , who were on terms. Rapier and Tc Monanui had the worst of the weights, but there was nowhere near the big difference there will be on Monday. The best trial over a distance was undoubtedly that done by Mask. He was accompanied over nine furlongs by Great Charter and Star Stranger. Mask, on the inside, made the pace, keeping just in front for. the first couple of furlongs, which were cut out in a speedy 27 4-ssec, and three in 38 3-ssec, the pace still being solid. The half-mile took only 61 4-ssec, six furlongs in Imin 18 4-ssee, and the mile in Imin 45sec, the full nine furlongs being run by Mask in 2min 9 3-ssec. It was a fine gallop, for the pace was not on all the way. Mask was reminded of his task by his rider two furlongs from home, but he responded brilliantly and went away from the other two, dashing past the post a good length ahead of Star Stranger, while Great Charter was another couple of lengths off. All three horses were ridden by light weights, with very little between them in the matter of poundage. Star Stranger made a much better showing, while Great Charter was feeling the pinch at the end. Two Riccarton horses, Count Cavour and Footfall, came out for a bout over a mile and a-quarter. The passing furlongs were reeled off as follows:—Four in 54 3-ssec, six in Imin 21 l-sscc, seven in Imin 34 3-ssec, nine in 2min 1 l-ssoc, and 10 in 2min 15 4-ssec, with Count Cavour finishing alone and going great guns. Footfall began to drop behind with half the journey covered, and was not persevered with. Count Cavour pleased immensely, for it was a fine effort. ■ Money Order, with a fair weight aboard, slipped over six furlongs smartly, taking Imin ISsec for the journey. The first two were cut out in 26sec and three in 37 3-ssec. This was about the best time over this distance of the morning, Lysander, Silver Mine, and Gascony went five furlongs, all being piloted by light boys. At the start Lysander got the best of it, while Gascony was a bit slow to get into - his stride. The lastnamed quickly got up, however, and then went to the front and stayed there, beating Lysander by a clear length, with Silver Mine the same distance further back. The first furlong over the hill took 14soc and the first quarter 25 4-ssec, while the last three furlongs were left behind in a fast 49 2-ssec, the time for the five furlongs being Imin 4 2-ssec. Gascony pleased most, for he showed rare speed. Aussie was sent out to gallop five furlongs with Joy King and High Finance. Aussie gave the others a start of three lengths. There was very little between them passing the half-mile peg, and they were in line half a furlong further on. _ Passing the three furlongs Aussie was in front, and on the turn into the straight he was a clear length in front, with his rider endeavouring to hold him back to his companions. Aussie drew away and passed the post with his eais pricked the best part of a length in front of Joy King. High Finance took Imin 5 2-sscc. Aussie’s time was Imin 4sec. The Riccarton filly, Ohildsplay, was given her first serious gallop since her arrival; being sent over six furlongs. She ran the last five in Imin 7sec. She was inclined to loaf a bit up the straight, and Ludlow was shaking her up. Once again .Mandane and Laughing Prince were responsible for a good gallop from the new mile post. They ran the first two furlongs in 25sec, half a mile in Slsec, and covered the eight furlongs in Imin 43sec, which was good travelliir r . Mandane, who had the advantage of tlTc inside running, was going the bettor of the two. In the Shade, Ti Tree, and Martarmn were sent once round, and they were all in line at the finish. They ran the first quarter in 28 2-ssec, the half-mile in 52 2-ssec, six furlongs in Imin 21sec, and "ot to the end of their task in 2min Isec. Volimond accomplished a smart performance, when she galloped five furlongs from the new barrier in Imin 3 l-ssec. RICCARTON HORSES. (Special to Daily Times.) CHRISTCHURCH, December 22. The Riccarton horses which aro to race at the Dunedin Jockey Club’s meeting and also the big contingent hooked for the West Coast circuit, left here by to-night’s trains. F. D. Jones went north to-night with Stormy. Arikiwai. and First Sight, who should pay their way at the Manawatu and Marton meetings. R. Emerson did not make the trip north with Assurance and Hoylake. F. D. Jones will have them under ids supervision during the trip to tlie Manawatu and Marton meetings. The two horses left for tlie north to-night, and they should race well, as they are in tlie best of health. With the departure, of all these horses to fulfil holiday engagements there are not manj - left at home in active training, and the local tracks will ho very quiet, for the next fortnight. There was a fair amount of work oa

the tracks this morning, but a lot of it was of the slow order. Nincompoop sprinted half a mile in SOsec, and did it well. He is in great fettle. . , „ Arikiwai went in good style over nve furlongs, running the laet half-mile in 49 2-osec. He beat Assurance, but the latter also pleased. . , Silver Paper and Countersign reeled off half a mile in 49 l-ssec, a very smart effort. Battle Colours, with Moorland as a mate for the Inst six, covered nine furlongs in Imin 55 3-ssec. He finished strongly, and it was a very attractive effort. Glenshce broke down while galloping at Riccarton this morning. She will have to forfeit her AVest Coast engagements, and a long spell may be necessary. Hue is bad luck for Mr D. H. Roberts and his trainer, F. Christmas, as the daughter of Sarto and Killjoy looked like being useful with a bit of racing. GREAT NORTHERN DERBY.
