With the exception of those received in connection with the Burnside Handicap, the acceptances for the first day of the Dunedin Jockey Club’s meeting, which opens on Monday next, provide ample material for some very interesting racing. A field of eight remains in the Otago Handicap, and the Federal Handicap has filled with one more. The racing at Wingatui will carry more than usual interest because the horses engaged also figure in the fields for the rest of the holiday meetings, which take place at Waikouaiti, Wyndham, and Invercargill. The handicaps for the Invercargill meeting will be declared at the conclusion of the meeting. ’ Set Sail put up a particularly brilliant gallop at Wingatui yesterday morning, and is now probably a better mare than at any part of her racing career. ihe daughter of Solferino is sure to > have plenty of friends for her chance in the Otago Handicap and also in engagements which may follow in the near future. Wingatui presented a fairly busy appearance yesterday motning, when some interesting work was put up by horses engaged at the holiday meetings. All the work took-place on the course proper, with the trestles a shade outside the middle of the track. The going was a bit on the soft side, but provided nice galloping ground for training purposes. Good as Gold galloped over six furlongs in Imin 22sec, and strode along freely in her task. Heather Lad and Royal Saxon were kept busy towards the conclusion of seven furlongs, left behind in Imin 36sec. Royal Saxon, who is more forward in condition than his companion, appeared to be staying on the better at the finish. Eyed Ova and El Nido were allotted useful tasks, and they were followed by Lady W-inton and Piton, who left seven furlongs behind in Imin 37 3-ssec *a good working gallop, , Brightling and Lucy Locket appeared to be about a match, at the end of five furlongs in Imin 8 2-ssec„ and Blue Dragoon ,required Imin lOseo to cover the same ground. ’ Pink Note and Beauty Light cantered to the nine-furlong post and then increased the pace. They ran the first half-mile in 54sec, and at the finish the Paper gelding had to be held back to the other as they came home to conclude eight furlongs in Imin 52sec. Pink Note is in good shape, but wore a fetlock and cannon guard in the near hind leg to protect against a tendency to knock himself. Rob was making much noise, but was drawing away from Streamer at the end of six furlongs, which they east behind in Imin 21 2-ssec. The Archery filly Tardy appeared to be putting more resolution in her work than Felony when running half a mile fn £4 3-ssec. Dumblane, with Royal Head as a schoolmaster, broke away from the half-mile post, and in a good rousing gallop, under pressure, ran home in 53 3-ssec. The two-year-old shaped well, and finished on straight, with a display of plenty of courage. Rin-tin-tin , was held back to allow a chestnut ponified two-year-old, by Some Boy 11, to lead him home at the end of half a mile in 59sec. Overhaul and Black Duke commenced at the five-furlong post, with the former getting a shade the better of the breakaway. They came on together, and Black Duke appeared to be master of the situation as they were crossing the line in Imin 7sec. It was a good gallop, considering that both horses have been a disappointment this season. Overhaul seems to be very slow in coming to hand, but is now shaping into an improved appearance. Rory O’More worked alone over seven furlongs in Imin 38sec, and Schottische and Wingatui covered five furlongs of a mile in Imin 10 2-ssec. Spearmaid had Imin 23 2-ssec against her at the end of six furlongs, and then Phaster and Camisader came along over half a mile in 56sec without apparently being kept as busy as Dumblane and Royal Head in their sprint. Phaster would, however, require to have a good deal in reserve, otherwise his gallop would be comparatively poor to that accomplished by Dumblane. Happy Queen covered seven furlongs in Imin 34sec, and the final six in Imm 21 3-ssec. The track was now drying up and becoming faster. Booster cantered a circuit, and then sprinted home with plenty of dash over almost half a mile. Wharnclifie . and Coastguard cantered round, and, after clapping on a solid pace, galloped 10 furlongs in 2min 23 3-ssec. Wharnoliffe was outstaying his companion at the finish. The Tractor filly Traction strode smoothly in a half-pace task. Set Sail, after cantering a circuit, broke away near the seven-furlong post, and reeling off each of three furlongs in 12 ran home in Imin 31sec, after covering half a mile in 40sec. The Solferino mare had Yoight up, and so carried a fair weight, apparently about 9.0. She did not require a lot of pulling up after the gallop, which, however, was a very pleasing display of speed, and one of the best the writer has ever seen put up at Wingatui. Set Sail was ridden out in her task, and she covered a goocj deal of ground where the going is bare of grass, and, perhaps, drier and faster than where other horses worked nearer to the trestles. Gay Sonnet ripped away as soon as she came through the gates, and galloped nearly a circuit before she could be steadied down. She covered a mile in Imin 52aec or a shade worse, and seems to be getting more difficult to handle. Circulation, Overdrawn, Loughrea, Haulage, Apple Dighton, Real Glad, Ail Smiles, Money Last Thought, Delicious, Hard Prince, King Sol, Miss Winkle, Cartoon, Galway, Wine Tray. Rosedny, and a few others got through Useful exercise. S. G. Ware’s team, consisting of Ark Royal, Arpent, Martis, Appian Way, and Green Cloth were working during the early morning. R. W. King returned from Sydney to Auckland in the early part of the week with Single Spear, who is a five-year-old gelding by Greyspear from Single Rose, by Masterpiece. . Single Spear carried 7.12 and won at Warwick Farm in December in Imin 12£sec. Lysander has been getting through good Useful work, and is expected to make a bold show in the Railway Handicap. Overdrawn bears an improved appearance as a result of his race at the Oamaru Jockey Club’s meeting. The Magpie gelding Piet is stated to be one of the most improved horses at Ellerslie. Sir George Clifford’s two-year-olds Full Feather and Prickles have been showing an improvement, and in their latest sprint covered half a mile in'49 l-ssec. Nincompoop has been travelling well in his work. A message to the Press states that the Grey District Committee sat for five hours to hoar the Nohra case. The inquiry was not open to the press. The finding of the committee was —“That Joseph Nohra did corruptly offer a share in a bet to a person named Roderick M'Lennan, having charge of. or having access to, the horse Moorland at Greymouth during the 1926-1927 race meeting, and that he be disqualified for two years under part 32 of the Rules of Racing.” It was decided, after hearing the evidence at the inquiry, to lay a charge against Roderick M’Lennan, that being a person having charge of or access to the horse Moorland during the 1926-27 race meeting, he did corruptly offer to accept a share in a bet from one Joseph Nohra. Douglas Cotton was charged that, being a jockey, he did at Greymouth during the ji>26-27 race meeting, corruptly offer to

accept a share in a bet from one Joseph Nohra. The charges against M’Lennan and Cotton are to be heard on January 4. Prior to going to the north Assurance galloped a mile and a-quarter in 2min 10 2-ssec. Hoylake assisted over the last mile. Assurance has not been racing up to his best form, but apparently holds a chance of making a better showing at the holidays meetings. Sir Roy is expected to reach Wingatui this morning. Countersign and Rotor have been shaping attractively in their work for engagements at the holiday meetings. Battle Colours seems to have improved since he showed a return to winning form at the South Canterbury meeting. Catalogues are to hand for the bloodstock sales to be held during the Wellington Cup meeting. They make quite a formidable appearance and contain ample material to supply the market to a very liberal extent. .... Elysianor is reported to be showing improvement in his schooling over hurdles. It is understood that Comic Song has been retired for the balance of the season. Bright Mark was galloped on in her race on Saturday last and displays a scarred leg. Hard Prince is again in york at Wingatui. A few days’ fine weather has resulted in the tractor being set at work on the plough gallop at Wingatui, and in favourable circumstances it should be open in a day or two. So far this season the plough gallop has been closed a good deal by bad weather, and as a result the grass track has been subjected to considerably more wear and tear than what is usually the case. Real Glad is commencing to show some polish on her condition, and is getting into something like racing shape. Loughrea has been on the scene at Wingatui once or twice during the past few days, and hopes are apparently entertained that the one-time crack will stand another preparation. Loughrea started a couple of times in the early part of last season and was unplaced on each occasion. A writer in a northern paper states that the present trainer of Booster will have a hard row to hoe to keep up with the record established by J. W. Jennings when ho had the Solferino gelding under his charge. The remark seems to overlook the fact that Booster is now up in the weights, and a chance of winning naturally becomes greatly reduced. With all due respect for the ability displayed by Jennings as a trainer, it should not be overlooged that the present trainer made the Solferino gelding and the former received a ready-made racehorse to start on. Mr W. Crosean’s threc-year-old chestnut filly Ciarenceux, from Pinlasc, goes in F. Holmes’s stable at Riccarton within the next couple of week's. A three-year-old gelding by Ciarenceux, from Sweetwater, has been taken up to be handled, and the two promising youngsters by Chief Ruler are now running out at Goodwood. A Wingatui trainer said yesterday morning that there are only two horses at Wingatui—Sot Sail and Booster. They aro both by Solferino, whoso stock have been particularly solid performers, although he has had wery few fashionable matrons on liis card. Tartan Sash, a four-year-old sister to Beauford, recently won at Maitland. The inference that 8. Ealer, of ParkOs, influenced the stipendiary stewards in their disqualification of Songift and his connections at Canterbury Park, cost Truth and Sportsman £250 in damages last week (says the Sydney Referee of December 14). Mr Baler was at one titne racecourse detective for the Western Racing Association, and subsequently an assistant stipendiary steward. Later he was a stibendiary steward to the Calcutta Turf Club for two years, and is now a grazier. The article complained of said that one of the disqualified men stated j Mr Esler had prejudiced the stewards * against him. In court, Mr Esler said he had not given evidence at the Songift inquiry, and though Mr Higgins rode with him in his (Mr Baler's) car on the day the horse’s running was questioned, he did not influence him in any way. The claim for damages was £SOOO, but the jury decided £250 met the case. TROTTING. FIXTURES. December 26.—Ashburton T.C. December 26, 27.—Westport T.C. December 26. 27.— South Wairarapa. Holmes has left for the north to assist at the Auckland Trotting Club's meeting At the Australian Trotting Club s meeting held on December 12 P. Riddle drove the Adonis mare Pandora, who won in 3min Slsec. Later in the same day he won with Shiek in 3mm 20|sec. Pandora started an odds-on chance, but Shiek showed a good price as second favourite. Delavan’s Quest also won in 3mm 22|sec. In referring to Sheik’s latest win in Australia, “Vigilant" said;—There was doubt in the minds of many as to how Sheik would acquit himself without hopples But those who had seen him at work had no doubt on the quuestion. And so they backed him, although popular opinion favoured Togo Dick. While the latter did not once show up, Sheik made up his ground in great style after longs had been traversed. Direct Mantle had a good lead at the five furlongs, but directly the home turn was negotiated Sheik had rushed to assume control. Thereafter P. Riddle took things calmly, and Sheik wound up with three lengths to spare. It was a particularly good effort. The previous best time for the raefe was the Srain 25Jsec recorded by Rock Boy from 155 yards behind in March, 1916. Sheik’s time was 3mm 20|sec,' and he accounted for the last mile in 2min 13 2-ssec. ing held recently at Cessnock was mThe running of Lillie Daly at a mectquired into by the stipendiary steward, and as a result six months disqualification on the trainer-driver, W. Goodwin, was decided upon. The mare does not come under the ban, It appears that, following Lillie Daly’s showing after being made an even money favourite in the Progressive Handicap, the steward ordered her examination by a veterinary surgeon, and the mare’s saliva was taken on the following Sunday morning. No trace of doning was found, but it was found that the mare was suffering from laryngitis in a severe form. The veterinary surgeon went on to report that the mare should not have been allowed to start, as in the circumstances she_ could not reveal her true form. Following on the receipt of these reports, the stipendiary steward disqualified Goodwin, the trainer-driver, for six months for having started and driven the mare when she was not in a fit condition to race.
