ADMISSION OF DEFEAT
WORLD'S MOTORING RECORD. STORY OF DISAPPOINTED HOPES. (Pieia Association—By Telegraph—Copyright.) LONDON, January 23. (Received Jan. 24, at 9 p.m.) “I will never build another car. I know when I am beaten,” declared Mr Malcolm Campbell after his fifth unsuccessful attempt to smash the world’s speed record. Th sum of £IO,OOO was expended on a 450 horse-power Blue Bird, in which the hopes and aspirations of several manufacturers were centred. It is at present on board a lorry going to London for overhaul. This expensive three tons of machinery has thus far covered only 100 miles under its own power. Its failure to achieve the 171.591 miles per hour at present to the credit of Captain Parry Thomas marked the destruction of the dreams which urged Mr Campbell to constant application for three years past.— A. and N.Z. Cable.
