VOYAGE OF THE RENOWN

DEPARTURE FROM JAMAICA. AN ENJOYABLE SPORTS PRO.GRAMME. (Pre» Association—By Telegraph—Copyright.) KINGSTON (Jamaica), January 24. (Received Jan. 24, at 8 p.m.) The Renown moved out of Kingston Harbour early yesterday morning. The departure was far simpler than the arrival. The salutes from the warships barely disturbed the Sabbath quiet. Crowds watched from the shore, and the ultimate touch of enthusiasm was lent by the cheering of a group of young negroes on the beach at Port Royal, whence the shore battery fired a last salute. The Royal party attended church in the forecastle during the morning. This, owing to the unpleasant conditions, had to be a standing service, no seat being possible. During the visit a full sports programme was conducted, including an Assocation football match, which was lost. The water polo and the relay swim were both won by the Renown, and the ship’s marines beat the army lightweight tug-of-war men. The officers of the Renown also joined in football and cricket matches the Navy v. the Army.—A. and N.Z. Cable. CHRISTCHURCH’S PROGRAMME. RACE MEETING TANGLE. (Special to Dailx Times.) CHRISTCHURCH, January 24. The tangle in connection with the race meeting to be held on the occasion of the Royal visit will probably be unravelled when the Reception Committee meets on Wednesday to discuss the position. Mr Geo. Gould (president of the Canterbury Jockey Club) stated on his return from Wellington that he had the assurance of the Minister of Internal Affairs that a totalisator permit would be issued for the club’s proposed meeting on March 15, the date to which the February-meeting was to be transferred. Mr' Gould said the Reception Committee could not very well go back on its agreement with the club. However, the New Brighton Trotting Club was proceeding with its arrangements for a meeting at Addington on March 15, for which it had been granted a license.
