NEW BRIGHTON TROTTING CLUB.

OUBIET WINS THE BIG RACE. (From Oob Special CohrespondeklM CHRISTCHURCH, December 18. The weather was fine for the conclusion of the New Brighton Trotting Club’s meeting, but a strong easterly wind made the air a trifle keen. There was a larger attendance than on the opening day. The fields also were bigger in most of the events, while quality was more in evidence among the competitors. The racing was of a much higher standard, most of the contests providing a lot of interest. In the New Brighton Trotting Handican the unhoppled trotters provided a great contest, with a fine finish. There was again a drop in the totalisator figures, though not nearly so large as on Thursday, the investment being £23,832, compared with £25,369 Us on the corresponding day last year, making tho_ total for the meeting £43.808, against £50,945 I Os last year. Deluge accounted quite comfortably foi i L'ho Thorn on Tuesday morning over five ’ furlongs, and if he can only repeat that „ form will be difficult to dispose of in the . sprint engagements at Ellerslie. The Thorn has been, doing little outside pf ’ sprinting, but with over a week at Ellerslie j for further galloping he will probably be . sent over longer courses. Like all Walter ’ Rayner’s horses The Thorn and Deluge are in great trim although the former would bo all the better for a race. Deluge is to take a place in the Railway Handicap, and The Thorn in the Christmas Handicap on the opening da- of the Auckland meet ing. Since he won at Feilding recently Allowav has gone on splendidly, and he should make his presence felt in some of his engagea ments at Ellerslie. He should Vie thoroughly a at homo over a mile course, for he seems e to take a little while to settle down in y his races. There is little doubt ‘’-is threels year-old is going to make a name for him- ■. self. On Tuesday jnovning he was credited with a particularly smart performance, and ;. on Thursday he was going better than i- Star Area at the end of six furlongs. , Allowa.v is still eligible to contest the B Great Northern Derbv. anrT may be allowed n to take a chance in the classic. 1. As an Auckland Cun trial. Mask’s gallop here on Tuesday would take some beating, x With J. Barry up, and carrying nearly half ; a stone more than the Cup vyeight, the 0 T.imc.nd gelding was conceding little pound--5 age to Lysamlcr wh"- they jumped off for v a mile trial Th ■ rnlt was in the lead over the first six furlongs, and then Barry got to work on Mask, who .-esnonded in a i, retnarkohle fashion. The Cup candidate wore Lvsnnder down over the last, bit J The time occupied was good Hipm 43sec). 1 for the pegs wore out about 18 feet, and 5 the course proper upon which the trial took d place was a bit dead after heaw chowers s the d.ay previous. Mask accomplished a u sterling performance in beating Lvaander

at a mile, for the latter is a brilliant sort, and he is going well. There is no doubt entertained as to Mask’s ability to run out two miles, for ' is not the sort to pull nimsell about in a race. G. M. Currie’s three two-year-olds are going to win good races, if not very soon, then later in the season. Unfortunately, Thaw is proving unreliable in his habits so we may have to wait for him to settle down. With another year on his age ho should be a good sort. Covont Garden, by Absurd from the_ dam of Mandane. will also do well as a sprinter, but as he has been suffering from the, effei, of a cold ho may not be forward enough lust yet. Ellerslio training notes will probably show how he is shading. Damaris. the half-sister to Lysander, has been in a similar predicament, although the filly at present promises to be easily the best in the stable. She has a ton of speed, and if nothin'’- comes against her will be found footing it with the best of them The filly does not shape very convincingly at the barrier, and this may tell against her when she take? on good Youngsters who have been proved, hast Tuesday morning Damaris hit out splendidly in a short sprint. Mr Currie was present to see hi? team at work and all the seven were sent against the watch. Benzcra. who last season was one of the best hacks in commission is to make a reappearance at the Taranaki_ gathering where he takes on the best sprinters. lie is nicel.i weighted but the consistent First Acre, who was unlucky at the start of bis only outing at Feilding, may bo a stumbling block for most of them. Last Saturday Be’—'va put up a good gallop at Haweva nv ’r five furlongs, and if his old trouble does not appear—a broken blood vessel —he ought to score before the holiday gatherings conclude. It certainly appears that Mr Henrys has issued a cordial invitation to Rapier to come north for the Manawatn Cup, for he awarded the southerner P-t, while Mr Lusk gave him a stone more in the principal handicap at the Dunedin meeting. Relatively there does not seem to be very much difference m the quality of the fields at Awamma and Wingatui, but the race at the latter meeting referred to is over one mile and a-quarter. and the Manawatn Cup one mile and a-half Still, this would scarcely account for such a distinct discrepancy in weights. Rapier and Plain Sailing are ruling favourites here for the Manawatn double. Although it was given out some little time ago that Ngala was a cot case, it is now expected that he will be racing during the holidays. Just how lone he will he able to keep going on the hard tracks remains to lie seen. He can hardlv be forward enough at present, but if ho stands up to it he may bo giving trouble to his opponents. However, it seems certain that ho cannot last much longer. Prior to the Feilding meeting there was a good word said for the Australian bred colt, Skvpoint, bv The Welkin, but, unfortunately, bis chronic complaint—weak legs—came against him, and he has not been seen out at a fixture recently. He proved better than The Lamb in a, workout over five furlongs in good time, so it may be concluded that he is a useful sort to have racing in maiden company. Ills next gpneavnnce will■ he in the juvenile events at the Taranaki fixture, in which he will be up against one or two smart youngsters, so that he may bo well tried out.
