OIL LEASE SCANDALS
THE AMERICAN TRIAL. EVIDENCE OF MR EDWIN DENBY. (Pros* Association— By Telegraph-Copyright.) WASHINGTON, December 8. (Received Dec. 9, at 5.5 p.m.) The former Secretary of the Navy (Mr Edwin Denby) testified at the Fall and Doheny trial that he took the responsibility of the Elk Hills'lease and Pear! Harbour contracts because he was advised that the naval oil lands of California were being drained by private wells near the rim. Asked by the prosecuting counsel who made the contracts. Mr Denby said: “I did it whether I wanted to or not.” Mr Denby declared that he urged the late President Harding to issue an order transferring- the naval reserves to the Department for the Interior, and he solicited the co-operation of Fall. Fall, however, stated that he had all he could handle, but he would be glad to do what ho could.—A. and N.Z. Cable.
