DEFECTS IN WARSHIP.
WORLD’S FASTEST CRUISER, ! COLOMBO, March 30. The British cruiser Emerald, the fastest of her type in the world, which, on her maiden voyage to China, arrived here in a leaky condition, is not expected to leave dock until April 5. The effects are believed to be more serious than was at first thought. On the voyage out, during her speed test, she averaged 31.5 knots for 24 consecutive hours. Many rivets were loosened, and a defect developed in one of the screw shafts. One plate has been replaced. The leakages into the fresh tvater tanks amidships are regarded as important, because of the possibility of boiler corrosion and the loss of speed in consequence of the use of slightly brackish water.
