MORE BAGS OF MONEY.

£IOOO MISSING. A MYSTERIOUS AFFAIR. The presence of between £2OO and £3OO in silver coin in bags and scattered around the ground in the right-of-way at the rear of the old Mutual Stores building is still a source of perplexity to the police, who have had their task made increasingly difficult by a much more serious aspect which now- attaches to the case. The thief or thieves who were prepared to leave such substantial loot behind must have had good reason for (loin so. This is borne out by a report from the police to the effect that Mr David Livingstone, fi m whose office the silver is reported to have been removed, has advised them of the loss from the same premises of £IOOO in paper money. According to Mr Livingstone, the money was not all his property, ns it represented the takings for three days at the Exhibition side-shows, in which there are others interested in addition to himself. Tne ruiiiours. therefore, in circulation on Wednesday evening that the silver was merely a side issue had some foundation, and in the light of latest developments take on a great significance, and the ease promises to be an oven greater problem than was at first anticipated. In explanation of the fact that such a large sum had been keot on the premises, Mr Livingstone states that as the banks were closed on Tuesday he took that day’s receipts home with him and left the rest in the bags at his office. Investigations yesterday showed that a window in the office had been broken, and it is surmised that the scatter of silver was caused by the bursting of one of the bags through being thrown to the ground from the window.

The police, however, are at present at a loss to explain the affair at all. as it is not a little difficult, Chief Detective Lewis states, to know how an entry was effected. The lack of positive clues makes it very hard to draw any deductions.
