GARDEN FETE SOCIETY.

ANNUAL MEETING. The annual general meeting of the Citizens’ Garden Fete Society was held in the secretary’s board room yesterday afternoon, Mr J. H. Walker presiding. The annual report stated, inter alia: — The committee regrets that once more the society experienced bad weather for its annual fete, and, owing to a defect in the electric light, very little was done in the evening. Had the light not, failed, it was anticipated that the evening would have proved successful. However, despite these very severe handicaps, the receipts realised £605, and expenses amounted to £366, leaving a balance of £273. With the exception of an account for electric light amounting to £74, which has been held over, the balance will be devoted to improving the various city reserves. The committee desires especially to appeal to nil athletic bodies for their assistance, as they are really the ones who derive the most benefit from the improvement made on the various reserves from the efforts of the society. Excellent entries were again received for the dancing competitions, which, despite the weather, were successful!’- carried through. There still remains plenty of work for the society, and it is hoped that the various athletic bodies will continue to assist the society to carry on the fete each year, and thus help to improve the playing areas for the various branches of sport. Mr J. H. Walker moved the adoption of the report and balance sheet, which was seconded by the Mayor (Mr 11. L. Tapley), who congratulated the society on its efforts, and said he desired to express his own, the council’s, smd the citizens’ appreciation at the valuable services rendered by the society in improving the dty recreation reserves.
