Mr J. L. Passmore reported on the recent quarterly meeting of the South island M-otor Union, hold in Christchurch. *He said hia mission had been a failure. The conference was not a representative one, as there was no representative from Southland, and he was the only delegate present from Otago. If no greater interest was to be taken in the South Island Union it would not belong before it became a Christchurch union. Ho had placed two resolutions before the meeting, one in connection with the Highways Bill and the other in connection with the Highways Board. Both resolutions had met with opposition, and he withdraw these so that there would be no opportunity of turning them down when brought before the next conference. Otago was accused of trying to get concessions from the Highways Board on account of the Exhibition. He also brought the question of tyre tax before the conference, and was successful in getting a resolution passed to the effect that the Government be- asked to fix a reasonable tax. The Chairman said that the present duty on tyres was not altogether satisfactory, it a type tax on the per lb principle was put through it would do a lot of - good. It motorists paid a reasonable amount towards the upkeep of roads in the way of tyre tax, then they would make progress. Mr Passmore was thanked for his services at the Christchurch conference.
