BOXING AND WRESTLING.

PALMERSTON TOURNAMENT. The Waiouaiti and Palmerston Wrestling and Boxing Club conducted a tournament in the Town Hall at Palmerston on Friday evening. The programme comprised seven boxing contests and six wrestling bouts. There was a good attendance, including officials of the Otago Boxing Association. Tho tourney wag under the jrarisdiction of the 0.8. A. The officials in control wore Dr Thomas, Messrs G. Ross, R. Anderson, R. Cameron, and M. M'Cabo (Palmerston); referee, Mr J. Kilmartin; judges, Messrs Paterson and Ruston. The contests were well conducted, tho boys boxing in a fine sporting and friendly spirit. Unfortunately, a most a regrettable accident occurred in the boxing final bout of the evening between E. O’Connell and B. M'Callum. The latter, when falling in tho second round, struck, his head heavily on the floor. Dr Thomas was immediately called, and it was found that the young man was suffering from concussion. Everything possible was done, but, despite this, he expired about 20 minutes after the fall. Tho appurtenances belonged to tho 0.8. A., and comprised the regulation ring, ropes, floor padding, and netting. The following are the results:— WRESTING. • O. Hewitt heat A. M'Gregor in two straight falls. A. Coutts beat T. Jackson in two falls. R. M'Callum beat H. Coutts. Semi-final. R. M'Callum boat A. Coutts, two out of three falls. Final. C. Hewitt beat R. M'Callum in two falls. In a special bout between two boys of eight years, S. Anderson drew with W. Murray. BOXING. Welter-weight. P. O’Connell (10.7 beat A. M. Coutts (10.8). E. Pile (10.3), a bye. It was a good bout, in which O’Connell had the better of the exchanges. Final. E. Pile beat P. O’Connell. A very close and keenly-contested go. Both boys boxed strong and game. Middle-weight. E. O’Connell (11.4) beat P. Gordon (11.4). R. M'Callum (11.3) beat H. M. Coutts (11.2). The bout between O’Connell and Gordon was boxed in a clean manner. Both lads stood up and exchanged rights and lefts in good fashion. M'Callum was too superior for his opponent Coutts. Tho referee stopped the contest in the last round. Final. E. O’Connell beat R. M'Callum. This bout had the unfortunate ending already referred to. OTHER BOUTS. Two six-round bouts were staged. The first, between R. Fulcher and J. E. Wilkie, was a clever and successful exhibition. Both boxed quietly, and their style of Tootwork and ducking was appreciated by the fans. There was an exhibition bout of six rounds between Lachie M'Donald (11.2) and Hector Lcckie (9.10). It was a fine bout, in which Leekie surprised tho audience by his showing against his heavier and more experienced opponent.
