SIR JOHN SALMOND.

HIS DEATH ANNOUNCED

A DISTINGUISHED PERSONALITY.

(Pee United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, September 19. Sir John Salmond died to-night. The lion. Sir John William Salmond, M.A., LL.B., was born at North Shields, England, in 1862, and was a son of tho late Professor W. Salmond, who for many years occupied the chair of philosophy and psychology in the University of Otago. As a boy ho accompanied his parents to Now Zealand, and, after completing his primary education, be attended tho Otago High School and the Otago University, completing his studies at the University College, London. He was admitted as a barrister of the Supremo Court of New Zealand in 1857, and 10 years later ho accopied a position as professor of law in the of Adelaide. Returning to New Zealand in 1906 ho was /or a year professor of law at Victoria University College, Wellington. From 1907 to 1910 he was counsel to the Law' Drafting Office of tho New Zealand Government, and ho then became Solicitor-general, a position w’nich he occupied until 1920, when he was apointed a judge of the Supreme Court. Sir John Salmond was a member of the British delegation to the Washington Armaments Conference in 1921, at which ho rendered distinguished service. • Ho was the author of a work of jurisprudence, which is recognised as an authoritative text-book on tho subject.
