MINERALS IN ONTARIO.
. GOLD OUTPUT ESTABLISHES A RECORD. Returns received by the Ontario Department of Mines from the metalliferous mines, smelters, and refining works of the province for the three months ended March, 1924, show the total value of reduction during that period was 11,575,151 dollars, a betterment of 2,355,296 dollars compared with the corresponding period in 1923 U* s Reuter’s Trade Service). The gold output for the first quarter of 1924 established a now record, the total of 277,5690 z, valued at 5.756,882 dollars, being- an increase of 64,1C60z and 1,362,369 dollars in value. Production was not hampered by power shortage as in the two preceding years. Ample hydro-clectric energy is now available, and other powers will be harnessed this year on the Quinse and Abitibi Rivera to meet expanding needs. Production of silver for the quarter shows a decline from the 1923 figures, explained in part by the absence of shipments' from Gowganda, where work at the Miller Lake O’Brien was concentrated on development, and at the Castle on mill construction. Work on other Gowganda properties is being vigorously prosecuted. The output for the period was 2,411,3320 z, valued at 1,552,694 dollars, the decrease being 316,4170 z and 260,182 dollars in value.
