THE QUEENSLAND BUDGET. NO REDUCTION OF TAXATION. Press Association —By Telegraph.—Copyright, BRISBANE, August 22. (Received August 22, at 8.50 p.m.) In the Assembly the Treasurer’s Budget statement showed that the receipts during the past financial year had exceeded the expenditure by £12,707. The estimated revenue for the current year was £14,147,P00, and the expenditure £14,137,000. Mr Theodore stressed the financial stringency and the need for economy in expenditure. No indication was given of the hoped-for reduction in taxation. BROKEN HILL PROPRIETARY. MELBOURNE, August 21. The Broken Hill Proprietary Company, for the year ended May 31, made a net profit of £279,000. CLERKS’ STRIKE SETTLED. PERTH, August 22. The clerks’ strike at Fremantle, which began on August 14 with a demand for higher wages, has been settled. CONTRABAND OPIUM. SYDNEY, August 22. (Received August 22, at 8.50 p.m.) Opium ingeniously concealed was seized on board the steamer Victoria from China. It was valued at £BI9O. The vessel carries a Chinese crew.
