STEER-ROPING CONTESTS. PROSECUTION FOR CRUELTY. Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. HON DON, June 18. The private steer-roping contests were ontinued at Wembley. A galloping steer, when roped, : turned a somersault, and broke its ueCk and died instantly. The police and representatives of the society ;.r tiie Prevention of Cruelty to Animals were present. A number of members of the House of Commons and others asked permission to watch tho contests, but m view of thd pending Police Court pro- . codings permission so lar lias been refuted. The Duchess of Hamilton and the marchioness of Graham, both noted sportswomen, who were amongst the early morning spectators, were most impressed by the skill of the cowboys, but they refused to discuss the incidents which are causing so much comment.— Reuter.
