GENEVA LABOUR CONGRESS
MAKING. SLOW PROGRESS. BLOC SYSTEM OF NOMINATION. Tress Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. LONDON, June 18. (Received June 19, at 5.5 p.m.) The Australian Press Association s special correspondent at Geneva states : “The conference is making very slow progress, the system of bloc nomination and voting holding up the work. A meeting of a group of South Americans submitted a block of names for election to the Anthrax Committee. The Australians drew attention to the absence of Commonwealth representation in the bloc, and the futility of carrying on uuder such conditions.’ The group agreed to individual nominations, and after a secret ballot Australia received 51 votes out of a total of 68. Messrs Curtain and Thomas objected to the same system in their group. Both were elected to the Anthrax Committee, giving/ Australia triple representation. The Australians were also elected to-night to the Baking Committee. “'The Italians threaten to withdraw unless they are admitted to the deliberations of the Grand Committee, the Labourites opposing this course on the ground that Fascist organisations do not fulfil the terms of Part XIII of the Versailles Treaty. They are being pressed to reconsider their objection.—A. and N.Z. Cable.
