THE COCAINE HABIT
POSITION IN MELBOURNE. CONFINED TO SLUM AREAS. Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyrignt MELBOURNE, June 25. The police report in connection with the cocaine habit states that it was introduced into Melbourne about two and ahalf years ago in the slum areas.. The police have no knowledge of any victims outside the slums. In connection with a recent case in which a man was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment for being found in unlawful possession of cocaine, the Melbourne police stated that the cocaine habit had increased to an enormous extent, particularly amongst slum dwellers. Investigation disclosed the existence of a combine, including several chemists, which was engaged in distributing the drug, and independently of this combine a man who recently arrived from England, where he served a term of imprisonment for cocaine smuggling, was carrying on an extensive trade in the drug. Women were alleged to be the chief customers of the illicit traders.
