DAME NELLIE MELBA

FAREWELL AT ALBERT HALL. GREAT ENTHUSIASM SHOWN. Pree* Association —By Telegraph—Copyright LONDON, June 24. There were scenes of extraordinary enthusiasm at Dame N ellie Melba’s farewell at the Albert Hall. “What shall I sing?” she asked when she had returned after what should have been her final encore. “ ‘ Home, Sweet Home,’ ” shouted the audience. Melba sat down at the piano and sang the song to her own accompaniment. Even then the huge audience was not satisfied, and refused to leave the hall, so Melba sang “Annie Laurie” and “Cornin’ Through the Rye.” Her voice showed extraordinary freshness, and she sang with the zest of a debutante. Her programme included the Jewel Song from “Faust,” a scene from the last act of “Otello,” and “Drink to Me Only With Thine Eyes,’’ which she says is her favourite English songs.—AE. and N.Z. Cable.
