NEW RAILWAY STATION.

WELLINGTON’S LONG WAIT. CONTRACT FOR RETAINING WALL. (Pes United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, May 30. Wellington has long teen waiting tor a now railway station, but the work has been hung up year after year through the necessity of reclaiming a large area from the harbour to provide the room required for the building and the yards commensurate with requirements. Negotiations between the Government and the Harbour Board, spread over several years, have at last come to a head, and an agreement arrived at, but even thou further delay occurred over the preparation of plans and ether preliminaries. The first real step towards an actual beginning of the work was taken to-day, when a contract was signed for the construction of a concrete retaining wall. The successful tenderer was Mr 0. F. Pulley, and the sum involved is no less than £181,794 15s. Seven other tenders were received, ranging up to £316,729. Even noyv it will bo six months before the work actually begins, and it is expected to take four years in all to build the wall. The filling in will be done with spoil dredged from the harbour, Tins is the ninth contract Mr Pulley has carried out for the Harbour Board. The price compares very favourably with the engineer’s estimate; -
