NAPIER THEFT CASE
AN INACCURATE DEPORT. (Pbb United Press Association.! WELLINGTON, March 2. A telegram from Napier on Wednesday stated that one Hodges had been found guilty of theft from the Railway Department, with a recommendation to mercy on\ the ground of the laxity prevailing in the department. The verdict was so reported in a Napier paper, but it is inaccurate. The actual ground of recommendation was the lax system which had hitherto prevailed between the accused and the carriers. The telegram in its original form reflected carelessness on the department, but it will, be seen that there was no justification for this in the Jury’s rider.
