THE JULES MICHELET
FAMOUS FRENCH WARSHIP. The Jules Michelet, which arrived at. Auckland from Sydney on Tuesday morning, is the largest French warship which lias vet visited this part of the world. She was ’ launched in 1905. Her characteristics are as follows: 15,500 tons; gunnery, four 8-inch guns, twelve &i-inch guns, eight antiaircraft guns, two torpedo tubes; engine power. 30 XOO h.p.; speed. 22 knots; length, 492 ft; width, 6011 ; depth, 28ft; officers, 54; men, 750. The Jules Michelet, fought during the war in the Adriatic Sea, took part in the blockade of Austria (fight of the 16th August, 1914. during which an Austrian cruiser was sunk—shellings of Catlaro). has been un successfully torpedoed three times, helped to protect in 1915 the rescue of the Serbian army, and convoyed the troops landed at, Salonika, and, after the armistice, took part in the operations of the Eastern Mediterranean and the Black Sea. The ship bus been named after Jules Michelet, a famous French historian, 17981874, who wrote a history of France, and made a special study of the French Revolution. As a philosopher he wrote two capital hooks, one upon womanhood, the other upon the sea.
