TECHNICAL COLLEGE MANAGERS.

9 MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Technical College Board of Managers, held yesterday, was attended by Messrs T. Scott (chairman), J. T. Paul, ■J. Horn, M.P., J. S. Douglas, E. F. Duthie, G. Clark, J. Haymes, Mrs Gumming, and Miss Runciman. COMPLETION OF THE BUILDING. The Works Committee, after carefully considering the question of the completion of the college building by extending the west end towards Burt Hall, made the following recommendations: —(1) That Mr Mandeno be instructed to invite tenders closing about the first week in February next. (2) That the conditions, both with regard to relations between the successful contractor and architect as well as between the board and architect, including fees, be the conditions in operation when the plans were drawn, and not those recently introduced by the Architects’ Association. (3) That the wing about to be erected be known as the G. M. Thomson wing. In moving the adoption of’ the report Mr Clark said it was believed by the committee that the cost of the building would not bo greatly reduced for a considerable time. Regarding the conditions of contract, he did not think, he said, that the local architects wore favourably disposed towards the new conditions. So far as the last clause was concerned, he thought that the Hon. G. M. Thomson by his energy and ability had earned the honour.—The Chairman, in approving the action proposed in the last clause, mentioned that 33 years ago Mr Thomson had been the first to call a meeting to form .a Technical Classes’ Association, and he had maintained close touch with the movement until his recent retirement from the board.— dr Duthie suggested that the committee should consider some other method of perpetuating the names of those who had given faithful service to the cause ot technical education than that of naming wings after them. —The motion was carried. OFFICE STAFF’S WAGES. The combined Finance and Appointments Committees reported recommending that the amounts deducted from the salaries of four members of the office staff under the Public Expenditure Adjustment Act be refunded. —The report _ was adopted, it being explained that it was now found that the reductions did not apply as in the case of the teachers. DIRECTOR’S REPORT. The director’s report set out that the returns for the year now completed show that during 1922, in addition to the 454 pupils of the Technical High School (day), 1117 students attended the technical classes (evening) and 245 students enrolled at the school of, art classes (day and evening). During the latter part of the year Miss C. Neale, L.A18., temporarily undertook the conduct of the singing 1 classes. He now suggested that early next year applications be invited for the position previously held by the late Mr. Sidney Wolf. —The report was adopted.—The Chairman stated that the attendance of 1816 pupils during the year was distinctly creditable.—(“ Hoar, hear.”) Having given notice, Mr Paul moved—- “ That full-time members of tho staff bo entitled to attend a class or epurse without, the payment of fees other than the enrolment fee.”—The motion was carried without discussion.
