THE SALVATION ARMY

ANNUAL DEMONSTRATION. The annual demonstration by the inmates of the Salvation Army girls’ home at Anderson’s Bay was held in the Dowling Street Citadel last night, the Mayor (Mr J. S. Douglas) presiding. In spite of the in element weather, the hall was filled with a representative audience that was a test! mony to the interest that is taken in the Army's social service work. , The entire programme was contributed by the girls of the home. In several respects it displayed originality in conception, and the manner in which it was carried out reflected great credit both on the girls and on the school master (Ensign Hildreth), who was responsible for the whole performance. All the items were received with hearty applause by the audience, and altogether the demonstration was an unqualified success. The programme began with an opening chorus, and included three or four other songs—mostly of a serious character. Three recitations (“A Little Girl’s Troubles”, “The Lost Doll,” and “Stealing Plums”) were given with expression, and the old-fashioned dialogue was well represented by a piece entitled “Appearances Arc Deceptive.” In the first half of the entertainment the girls gave fine displays of rod and flag drill and skipping, and a novel bed-making scene, and it concluded with a cleverlystaged tableau, “Two Christmas Days,” which showed a little waif happily estabtjshed in the warm friendliness of a Salvation Army home and joining with the other girls in the season’s good things. In the second half there was_ a reading contest, which aroused much interest, displays of ribbon and physical drill, and a final tableau enacting the Biblical story of the calling of Samuel. At the beginning of the second part of the programme the Mayor presented the following school prizes:—Standard VI. proficiency certificate and prize, Myrtle Bigg; Standard V, dux of school, Nellie Farquhar; Standard IV, dux of class, Frances Marshall; Standard HI, dux of class, Kathleen Francis; Standard IT, dux of class, Jennie Glyn; Standard I, dux of class, Ethel Reid. The proceeds _of the demonstration will he used to provide Christmas cheer for the inmates of the home.
