COTTON MAGNATE’S OPERATIONS.
A RECEIVING ORDER MADE.

He was regarded as the Napoleon of cottonmill finance, and was reputed to be a millionaire. The incident has caused a sensation in Manchester. —A. and N.Z. Cable.

Known as “the modern Midas” or the “Napoleon of Finance,” Sir William Hopwood, a cotton mill magnate, whose deals a few years ago aggregated £50,000,000, finds a receiving order in bankruptcy made against him at 60 years of age. Ho began life as cotton piecer. He was reputed to be a millionaire and was knighted last year. He made his greatest deals after the armistice. In 1919 he bought up 30 mills. Everything he touched turned to gold. His church and charitable gifts totalled £50,000. —A. and N.Z. Cable.
