ENGINEER’S REPORT.

The following is the monthly report, to be submitted to the Taieri County Council by the engineer (Mr B. B Couston):— North and East Taieri.—The con tract for the delivery of metal to depots on the Main South road has been completed. Centre road has been repaired with gravel from Milner’s pit, as far as the Owhiro Gladfield road. Kay’s bridge has been strengthened and the high masonry walls braced. Gladstone- road and Flagstaff road have been surfaced, a new gate provided at the entrance to the Silveretream on the Eicoarton road, and a start made with the clearing of the debris from the stream below the Owhiro-Gladfield road. Arrangements have been made with Mr Cameron for the supply and delivery of gravel from the Taieri Eiver for repairing the Moegiel-Outram road. Kaikorai and Otokia. —The Streets of Brighton township have been surfaced, and tenders have been invited for the supply and da livery -of. 230 yards of gravel for maintenance repairs. The fence has been set back at Kirkland’s comer on the Green Island to Taieri Mouth road, and the road formation widened. The bend qt Ogilvie’s, on the Main South road, has been metalled, and the ditch at Millier’s, Brighton, cleared. The fence between the railway station and the traffic bridge at Otokia has been repaired. A slip occurred on _ the Fernhill road, above the railway crossing, the road breaking at two places, and the hillside showing signs .of ‘ creep for some distance back. The road- was advertised dangerous, and lights subsequently burnt, but there has been no apparent further movement, and I think that by filling lightly at the two breaks traffic will be reasonably safe, and the lights might :be dispensed with. Outram and Maungatua.—The willows have been cleared at the West Taieri bridge, affording a clear view for traffic _ for a considerable distance on either side of the bridge. A 12-inch pipe culvert has been inserted at the hollow on Munro’s road. The Outram to Hindon road, and Centre road have been surfaced, and the ditch at Momona School ■ cleared. The clay roads have not been in fit condition for grading, and no further work has been done under Mr Dickson’s contract since last report. Deep Stream and Strath Taieri.—The grading of the Dee Stream to Hindon road has been carried on to about halfway between the old station and the Dee Stream School. The quarry squad have worked on the road from Sutton Stream to Sutton railway, blasting the rocky water-tables, grading the clay formation and gravelling wherever suitable material was available. The repair* to the river bank at Cottesbrook have been completed, the Middlemarch to. Moonlight road, surfaced, and the creek crossings that were blocked with gravel cl eared The Deep Stream footbridge has been repaired, and' the carpenters are now working on the Deep Stream traffic bridge. Schedule of Allocation. —I submit the schedule of allocation for expenditure on the main roads for the period ending March 31, 1923. The sum of £6090 has been divided, pro rata, between the ridings, and the sum of £IOOO set aside for special Government grant works, making a total of £7OOO to. be provided for.
