DISTRESS AMONG MINERS
AN INQUIRY URGED. LONDON, January 14. The executive committee of tho Minors’ Federation has decided to approach the coalowners with a view to both parties' making joint representations to the Board of Trade in order to secure an investigation into the political and economic causes of the present deplorable situation, with a view to improving tho position, and at the same time helping tho community. The executive points out that the miners in many districts are receiving wages below the subsistence level, which coal prices are insufficient to remedy. Many miners are worse off than if they wero drawing unemployment benefits, for which they would be ineligible if they voluntarily quitted their employment.
