EXTREMISTS’ ACTIVITY. RIOTS IN CALCUTTA. NUMEROUS ARRESTS MADE. Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright DELHI, January 28. At a crowded extremist meeting at Calcutta on Thursday all traffic was stopped for several hours. A large force of police and armed Gurkhas attempted to disperse the demonstrators, but they were stoned. One sergeant and two constables were wounded. Ultimately the crowd dispersed. A meeting was held again on Friday, tho crowds refusing to move, even when charged, and tho police were again stoned. Three sergeants, several constables, and a number of the public were injured. Eighty arrests were made. On the same day a serious riot occurred at Titagars, 13 miles from Calcutta. Four thousand mill hands demanded the release of the arrested men, who had assaulted the manager and storied the police, wounding the deputy superintendent and 12 constables. The police opened fire, killing two and wounding 40. The mob were dispersed. Precautionary measures have neon taken to prevent the trouble from spreading. Reports from Multan state that it is almost impossible to control the extremists, who organise daily demonstrations. There are indications of civil disobedience in other localities. A Moplah leader and four of his followers took refuge in a Hindu temple; and fonght to the end, all being killed by a detachment of the Suffolk Regiment. One soldier was seriously wounded. The police in Calcutta arrested 11 Germans from German steamers. They were armed with revolvers. One of them, a German lieutenant, was formerly a British prisoner of war.—A. and N.Z. Cable.
