FROM THE Otago Daily Times. “ Inveniam viam aut faciam.” FRIDAY, JANUARY 17, 1862.

On Tuesday last, about noon. Dr Burrows, conducted by Constable Carter, was proceeding towards the upper end of Waitahuna Flat to visit a sick man, when, as they were passing at some distance from two tents, a ferocious dog rushed upon the constable and bit him seriously in two places on the right arm above the elbow. Dr Burrows at once went to his assistance, and drove off the dog, and afterwards dressed the wounds at the Dart. Hotel, which was not far off. The wounds were of a serious nature, and it is by no means certain that tne constable will escape permanent injury. We have received a letter, signed J. G. S. Grant, respecting a recent case in the Resident Magistrate's Court, where one J. W. Blair was charged bv Robert Short with cutting trees at the Pine Hill. Mr Grant mckes a counter-charge against Mr Short, which, if true, should be made elsewhere. The letter is libellous and cannot be inserted. Information has been given to us that gold in considerable quantities has been found at a station in the South of the Province, \ about twenty miles this side of the border. We will not indicate the precise locality until we are in possession of further particulars. ARRIVAL OF THE ESCORT. The escort from the gold-fields arrived in Uunedin yesterday afternoon with 11,472 ozs. IS dwt. of gold. Of this quantity 8,867 ozs. 5 dwts. was from Tuapeka, iind 2612 ozs. 10 dwts. from Waitahuna. It is satisfactory to notice that this shows an increase upon last week's escort of 700 ozs., thus confirming the anticipations of an improvement so soon as the 1 miners were enabled to repair the damages done byi the late floods.
