KAIKORAI STREAM POLLUTED
CITY COUNCIL BLAMED. A. ohargo against tho City Council of polluting the Kaikorai Stream by permitting sewage, to escape into it was contained in the monthly report of tho Taiori County Mounoils sarutary inspector, who stated' that complaints had been made to him by ratepayers in tho Kaikorai V alloy that the I Dunedin Oity Corporation was tumiii" sowago into tho Kaikorai Stream at tho a pipo tliat served tho Roslyn district and was laid under the Kaikorai Valley road. The inspector stated that ho had visited tho locality last week, and had found many signs of sewago having been put into the, stream. Subsequently he had intervicwcxKtho city engineer (Mr M'Curdie), but without any satisfactory result. \? 4.i op ' y to tne chairman, tho inspector said that the oity engineer had at first denied responsibility for tho occurrence, but had later stated that ho would so© it did not occur in the future. He thought the corporation should be asked to seal the outlet, which, he had been told, got all that the pumping station could' not take. On Saturday the nuisance was going on, full blast, all night long. Th° county engineer (Mr B. B. Couston) J 1 ° understood that there was a valve on the Dunedin sido, and that when the station was overtaxed it had been the habit to turn tho sewago into the Kaikorai Stream. If that was so, a sto-j should certainly bo put to the practice. He had been told that nightsoil had been found by the stream below the bridge. A councillor remarked that tho dairy inspector had threatened a dairyman with the oss of his license owing to the fact that his cows had access to ground where sowago was. it was certainly not fair to penalise a man for somebody else's fault. -the council resolved to write to the corporation, drawing attention to tho existing sta|e of affairs. >
