Mr Guthrie has communicated . with the High Commissioner asking him 1 to inform the New Zealand Government * what foundation there was for Mr Hoover's reported statement regarding shipping. There is a feeling of alarm in some quarters about the statement made by Mr I Hoover regarding a curtailment of shipping facilities. Such a statement has been more i or less expected for some time, but Government statements have baen such as to ' lead producers to believe that there would • be sufficient ships available to keep New j Zealand trade going during next year. There is no reason yet to disbelieve the ! information given by the Government, or to become alarmed at the prospect. It is • well to remember that the controller of j the movements of British shipping is ■ Sir Joseph Maclay, with whom Mr Massey had speech not many weeks ] since, _ and it is to be presumed that 1 the information that has oome to New ' Zealand about the shipping prospects is ' the result of those conversations. When Sir Joseph Maclay speaks, the producers may take notice; but he has not spoken ' yet.
