HOME SCIENCE

PRINCIPAL'S ANNUAL REPORT. Professor Boys-Smith, in her report of the operations of the Home Science Department of Otago University for 1917, states that the year was a very satisfactory one on the whole, in spite of the insufficient accommodation at Studholme House, and the wholly inadequate rooms and equipment at the University. Twenty-nine students and four of the staff were in residence at Studholme House during the winter session, while 12 students were living with their parents or relations in the town. Throe students completed the diploma courso in September, and all three were appointed to good posts before the end of the session. Four students completed the degree course, sitting for the final examination in November. Those who received appointments durincr the year were:—Miss Alice Borrie. Miss Doris M'Kenzie, Mis? Hazel Bell, Miss Violet Bruce, Miss Dorothy Ellis, Miss Leslie Richardson, and Miss Bessie Loy. All the appointments and salaries wore very satisfactory. At least seven old students were now receiving salaries of over £200 a year. Since the inauguration of the home science course 15 students had gained the degree and 16 the diploma. Of these, 27 were teaching, two were married in 1917, one was needed at home, and one was organising and conducting club rooms for women and girl workers in Sydney. The balance sheets of both the Home Science Department and of the Studholme House account were satisfactory. The session of 1918 started with a roll number of 60 home science students, and of these all but five were taking the full degree or diploma course. Moreover. 21 were paying their own fees and had not asked for bursaries. The health of the students throughout the year had bre-i thoroughly yood, many increasing in weight and well-being. The parents had in many instances expressed keen satisfaction.
