ORPHANS' CLUB
Tho fortnightly musical gathering of tho Dunodrn Orphans' Club was held last evening and was very largely attended. Advantage was taken of tho occasion to make some recognition of Empire Day, the chief departure from the ordinary routine being found in tho toast List, in which was in- ?< V™ Ihe King," "The Empire." and it S. !?' A* and Our Boys at the Front. lhe one toast on which some extension was made was "Our Empire," which was no Ices enthusiastically received than it was proposed by the Mayor (Mr J J. Clark), and responded to by Mr C. E. Statham, M.P. Both these gentlemen gave utterance to the usual loyal and patriotic sentiments, which were received with marked approval. The military toast was responded to by Colonel J. A. P. Fredric. i-iic bulk of tho evening was, however, spent in son} and recitation, in both of \ hieh the Git Hans' Club very strong. C. Williams, ine olooutionary portion of the programme was entrusted to Messrs J. B. M'Conncll, tt r, rC ? Wn ellington Orphans' Club), S. H. Osborn. Among those present at the function were visitors from Wellington and othor places. Mention ma.y be made of the fact that a rr.an returned from the front in the person of a son of Mr F. O. Bridgeman, was amongst the guests. The orchestra played several selections quite up to standard, and the evening was a very sociable and enjoyable one.
