HEALTH OF WOMEN AND CHILDREN.

The monthly meeting of the committee of the Society for the Protection of Women and Children was held yesterday morning. Mrs Carr occupied! the chair. The matron of the Karitane-Harris Hospital reported as folk)we:—Number admitted during the month—mothers 4, babies 13; number discharged during the month — mothers 4, babies 12; mothers in residence, 4; greatest number in residence at any one time, October 10—mothers 2, babies 14; number on October 31—babies 12, number of visitors, 254; number of letters written, 34. Of the babies admitted during the month one came from Timaru, one from Green Island, and the remainder from Dunedin. All babies discharged, with one exception, were making excellent progress. -Nurses in * training on October 31 — Plunket nurses 7, Karitane nurses 12. Plunket Nurse M'Ginley ' finished her six months' training on October 4, and Plunket Nurse Graham on Nurse Watson finished her 12 months' course of training on October 3L Nurses Finlay and Wake have commenced their six months' training, and Nuree Parkes her 12 months' course. Nurse Thomson has returned to the hospital for a short course of training as a Plunket nurse. All the babies in hospital are making satisfactory progress. The Plunket nurses • reported as follows for Central and North Dunedin districts:— Number of new babies on the list for the month of October, 27; number of solely breast-fed, TO; number partly breast-fed, 45;. number of mothers shown how to preparo humanised milk, 8; number preparing humanised milk in their own homes, 102; number of visits paid to homes, 619; number of expectant mothers, 5; number visits paid to office, Stuart street —Adults 123, babies 85; , number of bottles of humanised milk sent out from the Taieri Dairy, 706 L The Plunket nurse for South Dunedin reported as follows:—Number of babies on the list, 318 j number of new cases for the month (babies), 23; number, of babies wholly breast-fed, 30; number of babies partly breast-fed, 20; number of expectant mothers, 5; number of mothers shown how to make humanised milk, 4; number of mothers preparing milk in the homes, 28; number of visits paid to the homes, 380; number of adults visit the Plunket rooms, 315 King Edward street, 120; number of babies visiting the rooms, ■ 1080. A special vote of thanks was passed to Dr Champtaloup for his valuable and interesting address draring Baby Week, and also to Drs Sydney_ Allen, Ernest Williams, Professor Boys-Smith, Mr Armstrong ,and Mr Tannock, all of -whom contributed in a great measure to tho success of the campaign; to Miss Isitt for her practical exhibition of exercises beneficial to children, and for her interesting display of games and suitable clothing; to the First Church Ladies' Association for their valuable service in the able management of the tea on the mothers' afternoon; and _to the many kind friends who generously did all that lay in their power to assist the committee in the organisation of the "Baby Week," with special mention of Mr Haweridge, Messrs Turnbull, Jones, end Co._, Smith and Smith, Oralis, Culling, WilHe and Co., Mr E. S. Wilson, Mr Simpson, Mr Bills, Mr Arthur Barnett, Mr Renrae, Mr Oliver, Mr Conn, and Mr Hamer. . The committee expressed ite grateful thanks to all thosowho assisted the Hospital Helpers' Association in tip thn collection on behalf of the '•'-iciety, end congratulated them most hfeartily on the successful result. Arrangements worr made for the committee to assist the association as usual in the annual collection, to bo taken up on- November 30.
