William Henry Hayman, farmer, married, 47, was killed while working at a saw wheel at Adamson's pinus insignis plantation in Waimate Gorge road this morning. A piece of timber flew back and struck him on tho forehead. Death was almost instantaneous.

An inquest touching the death of Private Gcorgo Thompson (Lkmedin), A Company, 54th Roinforoements, was held at Fcathcrston on Saturday, beforo Mr E. G. Eton (district coroner). Tho evidence went to sbow that tho deceased, who was 22 years of ago, was reported missing on tho 24th, and was found about two chains from the oookhouso at Tauherenikau on the 26th, with his throat cut. Tho tent mates of deceased, who had arrived a week previous with him from Trpiitham, stated that he appeared to bo in a despondent state of mind, and seemod to toko unkindly to military servico. A verdict was returned thai dooeascd committed suicido by cutting- bis fhiroat with a razor while in a despondent triuiio of mind.
