Word has boon received in New Plymouth .by cable that Alajor Weston has been promoted to lieutenant-colonel, and at present is on leave in London. Major Wylie, lato of New Plymouth, now in charge of one of the British base hospitals, where he has been doing splendid work, has been created a Companion of r Sfc - Michael and St. George, c 'r, announced (slates the Southland Times) of Mr Thomas Snow Miller, • a well-known surveyor and civil eng.neer, at the ago of 56 years. The deceased who was a native of Cardiff (Wales), being the fourth son of the lute L \ Mmer, Collector of Customs and Superintendent of Mercantile Mar.no, arrived m Invercargill about 37 years ago, and was for a time in partnership with the Jate Mr vV. A. Bows. Subsequently he earned l on his profession on his own account, and at the time of liis death, which occurred in Duinxlin on Monday, he was practising his profession in Esk street. The late Mr Miller was held in tho highest esteem by those with whom he came in contact, due to his genial and unassuming disposition, and he was well known throughout the whole of Southland in consequence of tho engineering and surveying work which he executed. A number of years ago he took uji active part in cricket, and was a valued member of the Invercargill Club, while, in addition, he ev.nced an interest in all classes of sport, none more so than Rugby football. The deceased leaves a widow and two of a family a daughter and a son. death occurred in Invercargill on Monday, after a very short illness, of Mr r c?' Mitohel. of Wa k wi. at the age of 64 years (says the So-, bland News). A native of Buncrana, County Donegal. IreMr Mitchel arrived in this country in 1876. He proceeded direct to the Manapouri station as a cadet with the lato Hon. Mr Matthew Holmes, but almost immediately took over tho managership of the station, which post he held until 1895. In that year ho removed to manage the Five Rivers station, which he controlled for a period of five years. At this time Mr Mitchel was in partnership with the late Mr J. E. Watson and the late Mr T. L. Barnhill in the ownership of tho Te Anau estate (Lynwood Homestead). . In 1900 Mr Mitchel left .Five Rivers and went to reside temporarily in the Bluff, removing to Invercargill, which had) been li s home ever since, in 1902. He carried on farming (Operations up to the time of his death, although he had not been strong for some years past. A keen angler and " n a~rl°n + exrilorer of the Lnki> country, the late Mr Mitchel had a splend'd collection of Maori curios. He was for years a member of the Wallace County Council. He was a widely known light-horse breeder. Ho leaves a widow and four children—two daughters and two sons. Two, Mrs D. M. King (New Plymouth) and Mr H. S. Mitchel (Napier) are in the North Island, but Mr Mervvn H. Mitchel is in Invercargill, where Miss Mitchel remains with her mother.
