EXPEDITIONARY FORCE RESERVE. BALLOT NEXT WEEK. (From Oob Own Correspondent ) WELLINGTON, August 14. Voluntary recruiting for tho 34th and 35th Reinforcements will be closed down on Saturday, and a ballot will be taken from among tho remaining members of the First Division of tho Expeditionary Force Reserve next week to fill up such va-cancics as exist. As no ballot was taken last month, and as two drafts require to be filled, the ballot will be a double one, and it is expected that between 14,000 and 15,0C0 men will bo called up under it. 'JL'his will leave somo 7000 men in the First Division, who k® called up by ballot a month later. The taking of the tenth ballot will probably bo commenced on Tuesday. DESERTER SENTENCED. NINE MONTHS' IMPRISONMENT. (From Oub Own Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, August 14. In Featherston camp orders it is announced that Private Richard Albert George Millford (Mounted Details) has been lound guilty by a district court-martial of deserting his Majesty's service, and has been sentenced to nine months' imprisonment with hard labour. * j CI MEN. TRAINING CAMP PROPOSED. (From Our Own Correspondent.) ** WELLINGTON, August 14. Inquiries by a Post representative in official quarters elicited the statement that it was intended to establish a camp for CI men—that is to say, men who could be made fit for, active service after undergoing special training. Numbers of the men now classified C2 will in all probability, on reexamination, be classified CI. It is not intended to take into camp all the home servico men. but only those who are likely to bo made fit for foreign servico by a special course of training. Full details of vhe scheme will be mad© publio before it is actually launched. GALLANTRY REWARDED. AWARDS TO NEW ZEAL ANDERS. | (Pee United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, August 14. The_ High Commissioner advises that the following New Zealanders have been awarded the Military Cross for gallantry on the field of action: — Second Lieutenant Alfred George Jennings, Northumberland Fusiliers (Mr W. T. Jennings, M.P., father). Second Lieutenant Victor James Gallic, Royal Field Artillery (John Gallie, 17 Stoke istreet, Wellington, father). GOING TO THE FRONT. A few friends met last evening to say "Au revoir'.' to Mr E. Ryan, who is leaving for the front. Mr Fennell made a presentation _ and spoke of Mr Ryan's qualities as a soldier and a civilian, and wished him God-speed and a safe return. At Whare Flat on Friday evening Mr B. A. Raokham, who is leaving for the front, and who has been in the employ of the City Corporation on the Silverstream water race, was presented by his fellow-employees and residents of tho district with a complete shaving outfit. Mr R. Sharp (race inspector), who made the presentation, wished him good luck and a safe return. PATRIOTIC CONCERT AND DANCE. A concert and dance in "aid of the sufferers by recent air raids in England will be held on Friday night in the Art Gallery Hall. A most attractive programme has been provided, and that, with the object of the effort, should assure a big attendance.

POET CHALMERS PATRIOTIC ASSOCIATION.

On Thursday afternoon and evening the hall presented a very busy scene, as both meetings were devoted entirely to the making up of Christmas parcels for Port Chalmers men and women on active service. Thanks to the willing co-operation of Red Cross workers and of the men who undertook the whole work of addressing the 220 parcels, the work was completely finished at_ 10 p.m. Last week 98 Christmas dominion parcels were forwarded to Dunedin as the Port Chalmers contribution to the dominion parcels scheme. This week the routine work of the association will be gone on with, and as there is much work to be done a good attendance of workers is asked for. Contributions havebeen received from the following:—Dominion Parcels: Mrs Harland, Mrs Sutton, Mrs T. Robertson, Mrs R. Robertson, Mrs Da Costa. Port Chalmers Christmas Parcels: Mrs and Miss Shaw, Mrs A. Coleman, Mrs W. Perry, Standard IV. _ "Work: Mesdames Albartson, Metcalfe, Gillick, Gardener, Jamieeon, Lawrence, W. Perry, _ Misses Eraser, Monson. Tait, Convent pupils. JOTTIFGS. Mr J. Morrison, of Alloa (Scotland), one of the overseas wool buyers in the dominion, has enlisted, ana will go into camp shortly. Lance-corporal Hanita, a Maori soldier serving with the New Zealand Forces, pleaded guilty at a court-martial at Westminster (London) this month to a charg of "having failed to report after Iris discharge from hospital. Tho evidence showed that Hanita dressed as a lieutenant, and posed as a prince with a high-sounding title. At the trial he confessed that ho had had "a glorious time." The decision of the court was postponed. There has been some doubt about the. identity of Dr von Kuhlmann, the now German Foreign Minister, but the Socialist journal Vorwarts makes it clear that it is the von Kuhlmann who trained notoriety as'secretary^to Prince Liclinowsky when the latter was in London as German Ambassador. .
