PRISONERS WITH THE TURKS.
Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. LONDON, August 13. In the House of Commons, Mr J. F. Hope said that the Government was giving attention to the question of conferring with Turkey regarding prisoners, on lines similar to those Which led to the recent conference with Germany at The Hague, over the treatment and' exchange of prisoners. GERMAN CLAIMS. CAPTURES DURING THE WAT?.. AMSTERDAM, August 13. The Germans claim to have captured in the three years ;of war 12,156 cannon, 4,938,056 shells, 10,640 wagons, 1,655,805 rifles, 155,829 revolvers, 8352 machine guns, 2288 aeroplanes, 186 observation balloons, and three dirigible airships. GERMAN FINANCES. WARNING BY CHANCELLOR. AMSTERDAM, August 13. The German Chancellor (Dr Midhaelis) said, in the course of an interview, that direct taxation of both income and capital would be insufficient to cover the requirements of the first Budget after the war. The people must accept "the introduction of State monopolies and increase of prices. BRITISH WAR LOAN. BILL THROUGH THE COMMONS. LONDON, August 14. (Received Aug. 15, at 0.5 a.m.) In the House of Commons, the War Loan Bill passed through committee. Mr Bonar Law stated that the pre-war taxation yielded £160.003.000, and in 1917 fihe yield would be £570.000.000, mainly from direct taxation. The Government had tried to get the -utmost- out of taxation without destroying the power of financing by loans. The present Bill was intended to meet debts that ihad been incurred.
