RAM AND EWE FAIR

GOOD COMPETITION. ' The annual ram and owe fair was held at Burnsido yesterday under tho auspices of tho Otago Agricultural and Pastoral Society, and attracted a largo attendance of brooders of sheep. Tho en trios, while being good, wore not so large as at last year's fair, but tho quality of tho stock brought forward was up to the standard of those offered at the 191G fair. The fact that thero wero fewer entries was in favour of vendors according to tho law of supply and demand. A now system.of selling was tried yesterday with a view to keeping buyers together, and it worked admirably. In former years tho various types and breeds havo been penned and have been sold as penned, but yesterday they wore grafted into one pen in order as they appeared on tho catalogue. That is to say, as ono lot was disposed of another succeeded it in t.ho same pen. It was an experiment which proved satisfactory, and saved tho loss of a good deal of time for vendor and buyer alike, who would otherwise have had to pass from one pen to another.

The fair opened at 11 a.m. with Border Leicester stud rams being offered. This breed proved most in demand, and as a result tho prices wore higher than for tho other breeds. Tho prices at which sales wero effected varied from 7gs up to 37gs, the latter figure being paid for a onc-shear-ling ram by Prido of Leaston from a General Clark ewe, ,bred by Mr James Ross, ot tho Mount Hampton stud, Palmerston. ?>lr L. M'ljoiinan, Berwick, both sold on account of Mr John M'Kerchar, Woodlands. A two-shear by Prido of Leaston (imp.) wits knocked down on behalf of Mr John Ross to Mr L. S. B.
