CLUTHA COUNTY COUNCIL

The monthly meeting of the Cltrtha County Council was hold in the Council Chambers on Friday, the chairman (Cr Edwards) presiding. The engineer's report on work executed during the month, and work required was adopted. The following motions were dealt with:— It was decided " That tenders be called for metaUing up to £40 on Miller's road (Taumata)." It was carried "That the council place on record its appreciation of the good work done by Mr B. Owen, who had been in charge- of the puiblio works in the district during the past two years."—Carried. Tho following tenders were accepted: 15 chains gravelling on Tweedie's Ford road— it. M'Donald, 2s 6d per yard; metalling 40 chains on Tuapeka Mouth to Clydevale road—W. M'lntosh, 20 chains at £5 10s, fresh tenders to be called for the 16 chains; metalling 20 chaiis on Burke's -Ford to Tuapeka Mouth road—W. M'lntosh, £4 Bs. The following correspondence was dealt with:— Hon. W. Eraser advised that he was obtaining a report relative to grant for the Balclutha-Port Molyneux road.—Received. Tho District Health Officer (Dunedin) wrote asking what progress had been made in regard to (1) tho nuisance caused by the deficient drainage at Owaka railway station and (2.) a nuisance at Ratanui.—lt was decided that the matter be referred to the solicitor for the Counties' Association. Mr A. S. Malcolm forwarded a copy of a letter and resolution sent to the Hon. W. Fraser by the Bruce County Council, the latter body having asked Mr Malcolm's support of the resolution as follows: "That section 139 of the Public Works Act, 1908, be amended so' as to prohibit heavy traffic on any bridge which the local authority having control of such bridge has, by resolution duly notified, declared to he unsafe for such traffic." Mr Malcolm asked the council for its opinion on tho above matter.—lt was carried that the Bruce County Council be supported in its action to try and get the Act amended.

Messrs Jobn Hall and Sons (Paretai) and three other ratepayres of South Molyneux Riding petitioned the council to have Prentice's road gravelled from the Main road back to the river, a distance of about 60 chains.—lt was decided that the engineer should have the road graded at his earliest convenience. Mr Samuel Trusler (Waipahi) wrote stating that he had had the misfortune to break a small bridgo in tho Wairuna district. The structure Bad been built of very light material. The bearers were 9x5, and were completely rotten. Ho suggosted that concrete pipes be used when effecting repairs. The bridges in the locality were in a state of disrepair.—lt was carried that the engineer procure 3ft 6in concrete pipes to repair the bridge.
